⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Obsession takes the classic “be careful what you wish for” setup and turns it into an increasingly unhinged nightmare. Bear is a painfully awkward lad secretly in love with his best mate Nikki, so naturally he does what every emotionally stable person would do—uses a cursed mystical object to force her to love him back. Predictably, this goes catastrophically wrong. What starts as romantic desperation mutates into possessive horror, with Nikki’s affection becoming so intense it feels less like love and more like being hunted by a very beautiful demon who knows your Wi-Fi password. THE PROS The biggest win here is how uncomfortable the whole thing feels. Not jump-scare uncomfortable. Proper skin-crawling “this situation is deeply wrong” uncomfortable. Inde Navarrette is brilliant because she never plays Nikki like a generic horror villain—she’s tragic, frightening, needy, furious, and terrifyingly unpredictable all at once. Curry Barker directs the film like someone who understands that obsession isn’t loud at first. It creeps in slowly, then suddenly you’re barricading doors. The practical gore is nasty without feeling gimmicky, and the film’s dark humour lands far more often than expected. There’s also a very sharp underlying point about entitlement disguised as romance, which gives the whole thing actual substance instead of just blood and screaming. THE CONS It lands at an 8/10 because the final act gets a bit too chaotic for its own good. The film spends so much time building dread carefully that when things fully explode, it occasionally feels like it’s sprinting to keep up with itself. A few supporting characters exist purely to be horror-film collateral damage, and some viewers might find Bear so frustrating early on that they want to launch him into the sea. It misses the 9/10 mark because despite all the brilliant tension, it never quite sticks the emotional landing hard enough to become an all-timer. THE VERDICT An 8/10. Creepy, clever, and weirdly sad underneath all the madness. It’s the sort of horror film that leaves you feeling slightly grimy afterwards, like you’ve accidentally read somebody’s private diary and now need a shower. A massive step up from the usual conveyor belt horror nonsense, and one of those rare films where the “relationship horror” actually works instead of sounding clever in a marketing meeting. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • The cursed “One Wish Willow” prop was originally designed to look far more elaborate, but Curry Barker reportedly rejected it because he wanted it to resemble something cheap you’d find gathering dust in a strange roadside shop.• Early festival audiences apparently laughed far more than expected during certain violent scenes, which led the sound team to subtly rebalance parts of the score to make the humour feel intentional rather than accidental.• Inde Navarrette stayed largely separate from the rest of the cast during filming once Nikki’s behaviour becomes more obsessive, purely to maintain the uncomfortable atmosphere on set.• The film’s unsettling phone number marketing campaign caused enough confusion online that some people genuinely thought the cursed object from the film was part of an ARG hidden across social media.• Curry Barker has openly admitted one inspiration came from the terrifying idea of “someone loving you so much they stop seeing you as a human being.” Which is honestly more horrifying than half the monsters Hollywood keeps recycling. THE VIBE Like reading old text messages from an ex at 3am and suddenly realising you might actually need to move house. Romantic, sweaty, creepy, and quietly deranged.
