⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Set in a paranoid, near-future California, Bob (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a washed-up revolutionary living off-the-grid with his sharp-witted daughter, Willa. Bob spends his days in a drug-fueled haze until his past catches up with him in the form of Colonel Steven Lockjaw (Sean Penn), a high-ranking official with a personal vendetta and a dark secret involving Willa’s parentage. When the military descends on their sanctuary town, Bob is forced to ditch the bathrobe and go on a frantic, bumbling mission to rescue his daughter from a shadowy cabal of white supremacists and corrupt government agents. THE PROS Leonardo DiCaprio is pure quality as a "degenerate screw-up," delivering a performance that is both hilarious and surprisingly sincere. His ongoing struggle to remember secret code words while high is a total winner and provides some of the best laughs in the movie. It’s a 9/10 because Paul Thomas Anderson’s direction is epic status, especially the car chases which look honest and visceral on the big screen. Sean Penn is a genuine belter as the villain, leaning into a cartoonish, lizard-like energy that makes him incredibly fun to hate. Teyana Taylor owns the first part of the film as Perfidia, bringing a punchy, magnetic presence that grounds the film's wilder political themes. The Jonny Greenwood score is absolute quality, keeping the tension tight throughout the nearly three-hour runtime. THE CONS It earns a 9/10 because the middle part can feel a bit sluggish as the plot splits between multiple characters, making the central father-daughter bond feel slightly sidelined.
