Overview

After serving his country in the Army, Unique is falsely accused of assault and sent to prison. Once released, Unique sets up shop in Ohio to restart his life, linking up with his only surviving relative, Ramsey. There’s something insidious happening in this town, though, as its racist sheriff and his crew of similarly bigoted acolytes all have a knack for violence and share a gruesome secret pertaining to a recent string of missing young Black men. When they set their sights on Unique and turn his life upside down, the former soldier has no choice but to bring the ruckus down on the sheriff and his goons.

Instead, he finds himself stuck in a hostile "sundown" town run by a corrupt sheriff and a violent gang of bat-wielding racists. When he uncovers a horrific conspiracy tied to the disappearance of local young men, Unique uses his military background and serious martial arts skills to launch a righteous, one-man war for justice. THE PROSShameik Moore is absolutely brilliant in the lead, bringing a brutal, stone-faced deadpan to the action scenes that makes him look like a total badass. RZA’s direction is pure, stylized chaos that blends classic Kung Fu cinema with a gritty, old-school exploitation film vibe. The action choreography is top-tier and gives you that perfect, fist-pumping emotional release when Unique finally starts handing out proper beatdowns to the locals who deserve it. THE CONSThe timeline of the movie is completely all over the place and will leave you scratching your head. It has phone booths and a soundtrack that scream the 1990s, but then characters are talking about serving in Iraq, making the whole setting feel a bit dazed and confused. A few of the heavier dramatic subplots get slightly messy, meaning the pacing occasionally wobbles when the film pauses the action to explain its massive conspiracy. THE VERDICTAn 8/10.
