⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY A poor family living in a semi-basement decides to "LinkedIn-climb" their way into the lives of a wealthy, clueless family. It starts as a hilarious con-artist comedy where everyone is faking a degree, but halfway through, Bong Joon-ho pulls the rug out and turns it into a claustrophobic thriller about class warfare. It’s the ultimate "eat the rich" story, except the rich are actually quite nice, which makes the whole thing much more uncomfortable. THE PROS The pacing is structural perfection. The way the house is designed—all glass, stairs, and hidden corners—becomes a character in itself. The "Peach Scene" is a masterclass in editing, and the dialogue is sharp enough to cut skin. It manages to be a slapstick comedy, a social commentary, and a horror movie all at once without ever feeling like it’s trying too hard. THE CONS The "twist" in the second half is a total vibe-shift that might leave you with emotional whiplash if you were enjoying the lighthearted heist energy of the first hour. Also, once you’ve seen it, the rewatch value is slightly lower because you can never recreate that specific brand of "what the hell did I just watch?" shock. THE VERDICT It’s the first non-English film to win Best Picture for a reason. It’s a razor-sharp look at society that proves the scariest monsters aren't under the bed—they’re usually living right under the floorboards of the status quo. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA Director Bong Joon-ho was actually a tutor for a rich family in college, just like the son in the movie. He admitted he felt like he was "peeping into their private lives." Also, that $2,500 trash can in the Park’s house was a real prop—Bong was so terrified of breaking it that his hands shook every time he had to move it. THE VIBE Like a sophisticated dinner party where someone accidentally knocks over a vase and discovers a rotting secret behind the wallpaper. Equal parts fancy and filthy.
