⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Port Royal is a picture of British order until the notorious Black Pearl attacks, led by the undead Captain Barbossa. They kidnap the Governor’s daughter, Elizabeth Swann, who unknowingly possesses a cursed Aztec gold medallion. To save her, the straight-edged blacksmith Will Turner strikes an unlikely alliance with the eccentric, rum-soaked Captain Jack Sparrow. Jack wants his ship back; Will wants his girl back. As they pursue the Pearl, they discover the terrifying truth: Barbossa and his crew are immortal skeletons who only reveal their true forms in the moonlight, and they need a blood sacrifice to break a decade-long curse. THE PROS This is the absolute business of adventure movies and a winner for redefining the genre. Johnny Depp’s performance as Jack Sparrow is epic status—it’s a sincere, lightning-in-a-bottle moment that turned a theme park attraction into a cinematic powerhouse. Geoffrey Rush is quality as Barbossa, bringing a grizzled menace that perfectly balances Jack’s flamboyant swagger. It’s a 9/10 because the chemistry between the "four leads" is pure quality, and the script is punchy, witty, and surprisingly smart. The practical sets and the ship battles feel authentic and heavy, while the 2003 CGI for the skeletal pirates still looks better than some 2026 blockbusters. Hans Zimmer and Klaus Badelt’s score is a genuine belter that makes you want to go out and buy a boat immediately. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Rubber Hats: Johnny Depp kept accidentally knocking his leather pirate hats overboard during filming. After he lost ten of them to the ocean, the costume department got punchy and made him a set of rubber ones. That way, if they fell in, they’d just float until the crew could fish them out.• Left is Right: Geoffrey Rush had a sincere theory that people watch the screen from left to right, like reading a book. He made sure he was almost always positioned on the left side of the frame so the audience would look at him first, especially when he was sharing scenes with the scene-stealing monkey, Jack.• Eyeliner Logic: Jack’s signature heavy eyeliner wasn't just a style choice; it was a necessity. The lighting in the cave scenes was so dark that the makeup team used heavy kohl to make Depp’s eyes actually pop on screen. Gore Verbinski liked the look so much he made it Jack's permanent "vibe."
