⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Bones is the fierce lead of a dysfunctional L.A. ballet troupe traveling to a high-stakes competition in Budapest. When their bus breaks down in the middle of the Hungarian woods, the girls—including socialite Princess and kind-hearted Zoe—seek shelter at a remote inn. They quickly realize they’ve walked into a trap set by a local crime family led by Devora, a former prima ballerina with a prosthetic leg and a massive grudge. When their coach is murdered, the dancers have to stop bickering and use their flexibility, pain tolerance, and some razor-bladed pointe shoes to fight their way out of a literal death trap. THE PROS The central premise is a winner—weaponizing ballet training as a form of martial arts is a quality idea that provides some genuinely unique action beats. Maddie Ziegler is punchy as Bones, bringing a level of physicality that makes the "dance-fighting" feel sincere. Seeing Uma Thurman chew the scenery as a bitter, vengeful villain is a quality touch, even if she doesn't get nearly enough screen time. It’s a 6/10 because when the action actually kicks in—especially the "Nutcracker" showdown with the razor shoes—it’s epic status and visually distinct. Lana Condor also deserves a nod for making the "alpha bitch" character of Princess surprisingly bearable by the end. THE CONS It earns a 6/10 because the tone is a bit of a damp squib; it can't decide if it wants to be a gritty survival horror or a campy action flick. The first half is quality-deficient in terms of pacing, feeling slightly sluggish as we wait for the bus to break down and the actual plot to start. While the "razor blade" concept is quality, the movie is strangely shy about showing real gore, which feels a bit off for an R-rated thriller. It misses a 7/10 mark because the characters, aside from Bones and Princess, are paper-thin archetypes who don't get much to do other than look terrified. THE VERDICT A 6/10. Decent and highly recommended if you’re looking for a "B-movie" with a unique hook. It’s a winner for the choreography and the novelty factor. Go and watch it for the basement fight—it’s quality stunt work. Her character's deafness is woven into the plot’s tension, particularly during a sequence where she loses her hearing aid while trying to evade the mercenaries.
