⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Will Rodman is a scientist in San Francisco testing an experimental viral drug designed to cure Alzheimer’s. When his lab’s star subject is put down, he discovers she left behind a baby chimp named Caesar who has inherited advanced intelligence. As Caesar grows, he realizes he’s neither human nor a common pet, eventually finding himself locked in a cruel primate shelter. Betrayed by the humans he loved, Caesar uses his superior mind to lead an uprising, sparking a global shift that puts humanity on the brink of extinction. THE PROS This is a win for rebooting a tired franchise with a sincere emotional core. Andy Serkis is a total belter as Caesar; the motion-capture technology was a celebratory explosion for the time, but it’s the nuance in his performance that makes the character feel real. The bridge sequence is an absolute standout—punchy, high-stakes action that feels earned after the slow-burn buildup. It’s a good movie because it makes you root for the "villains" of the original series, showing exactly why Caesar decided that "Apes together strong" was the only way forward. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the human characters, while played by solid actors like James Franco, can feel a bit sluggish compared to the compelling journey of the apes. Some of the CGI in the early scenes hasn't aged perfectly and can be a bit of a head-scratcher next to the later films. It misses the 9/10 mark because it follows a fairly predictable "origin story" template, but it’s still a highly recommended start to a legendary trilogy. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and a recommendation for anyone who thinks they’ve seen it all when it comes to sci-fi reboots. It’s a vault essential for the performance-capture tech alone. Go and watch it for Caesar’s first spoken word—it’s a belter of a moment that still gives you chills. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • No Real Apes: Unlike the original 1968 film which used makeup, or the 2001 version that used puppets and suits, there were no real apes used in this production. Everything was achieved through motion capture and digital effects. • Koba’s Origins: The scarred ape Koba, who becomes a major player in the sequels, was named after Joseph Stalin’s revolutionary nickname. • Easter Eggs: The Icarus spacecraft mentioned on the news is a nod to the original film’s ship, subtly setting up the timeline where astronauts might eventually return to a world they no longer recognize. THE VIBE Like a storm cloud gathering over a beautiful city. It smells like sterile labs, damp redwood forests, and rain-slicked metal. It makes you want to rethink how we treat animals, stay away from San Francisco bridges, and realize that intelligence is a heavy burden.
