⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY If the previous film was about Rocky proving he could go the distance, Rocky III is about what happens when you get a bit too comfortable at the top. We find the Italian Stallion living the high life with fancy cars and silk suits, while a terrifying, mohawked wrecking ball named Clubber Lang is tearing through the rankings just to get a piece of him. It is a story of losing your hunger, finding a very unlikely ally in your former rival, and trying to get back that fire in the eyes that made you a champion in the first place. THE PROS Mr. T is arguably the best antagonist in the whole franchise; he brings a raw, aggressive energy that actually makes you fear for Rocky’s safety. The film also gives us the legendary bromance between Rocky and Apollo Creed, which leads to some of the most iconic training scenes in cinema history—beach sprints and high-socks included. The soundtrack officially introduces "Eye of the Tiger," which is basically the gold standard for workout music. It is a faster-paced, more colourful, and incredibly entertaining chapter that successfully moves the series into the eighties without losing its heart. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because it is definitely the moment the series starts to lean into the more "superhero" territory, moving away from the gritty realism of the first film. The pacing is very quick, which means some of the emotional beats—like the loss of a key character—feel a bit rushed before we are back to the training montages. It misses the 9/10 status because some of the wrestling crossover scenes with Hulk Hogan, while fun, feel a bit wet and purely there for the spectacle. THE VERDICT An 8/10. This is a good film and a masterclass in how to keep a franchise fresh by flipping the script on its main characters. It is a genuine, high-energy belter that is the business when it comes to pure motivation. Go and watch it if you want to see Rocky at his most vulnerable and his most triumphant, all while being chased by a man who "pities the fool." It is a vault essential for any movie marathon. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Statue of Liberty: The famous bronze Rocky statue used in the film was actually commissioned by Sylvester Stallone; after filming ended, he gifted it to the city of Philadelphia, where it still stands today at the bottom of the Art Museum steps. • Heavy Hitter: To play Clubber Lang, Mr. T was chosen out of over a thousand applicants after Stallone saw him in a "World's Toughest Bouncer" contest on the telly and loved his natural intensity. • Close Shave: During the final fight, Stallone reportedly got so lean for the role that his body fat percentage dropped to around 2.8%, which he later admitted was dangerous and made him feel incredibly dizzy during filming. THE VIBE Like a bright neon gym, the smell of leather gloves and sea salt, and a sudden urge to start shadow-boxing in your kitchen. It is energetic, stylish, and deeply motivating. It makes you want to find a training partner, buy some gold chains, and never let yourself get "civilised."
