Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY If you want to know what the 1980s felt like in a single sitting, Rocky IV is your answer. This time, the Italian Stallion isn't just fighting for a belt; he is fighting for his best mate, Apollo Creed, and the pride of the Western world. He swaps the sunny streets of Philly for the frozen wilderness of Russia to take on Ivan Drago, a blonde, steroid-fuelled mountain of a man who makes a brick wall look soft. It is a film that essentially replaces a complex plot with two massive training montages and a final fight that could end the Cold War. THE PROS Dolph Lundgren is the absolute business as Drago; he barely says ten words, but his physical presence is terrifying enough to make anyone want to hide under their bed. The soundtrack is a celebratory explosion of synthesizers and power ballads that will make you want to go and punch a side of beef immediately. The training contrast is a total win—seeing Rocky lift logs and climb snowy mountains while Drago is hooked up to state-of-the-art machinery is pure cinematic gold. It is unapologetically loud, proud, and delivers exactly what you want from a Rocky film. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because it is definitely the point where the series moves away from gritty drama and into the world of superhero logic. The pacing is so fast it is almost a Languid Burn in reverse; there is so much music and montage that the actual story feels a bit thin. It misses the 9/10 status because it is undeniably cheesy, and the inclusion of a talking robot as a birthday present for Paulie is a total head-scratcher that hasn't aged particularly well. THE VERDICT An 8/10. This is a good film and quite possibly the most entertaining sequel in the entire franchise. It is a genuine, adrenaline-pumping belter that knows exactly what it is and doesn't apologise for it. Go and watch it if you want to see the ultimate underdog story taken to its most extreme, muscle-bound conclusion. It is a vault essential for a Friday night in, even if it is more of a music video than a serious drama. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Hospital Bills: Sylvester Stallone wanted the fight to look authentic, so he told Dolph Lundgren to actually try and knock him out—the resulting punch to the chest was so hard it caused Stallone’s heart to swell, landing him in intensive care for eight days. • Heightened Stakes: To make the "Soviet" giant look even more imposing, the production used camera tricks and lifts in his boots to make the 6ft 5in Lundgren appear even taller next to the 5ft 10in Stallone. • Directorial Control: Not only did Stallone star in the film, but he also wrote and directed it, making it the most successful entry in the series at the box office for over thirty years. THE VIBE Like a neon-lit gym, the smell of sweat and cold mountain air, and the sound of a roaring crowd. It is high-octane, patriotic, and incredibly intense. It makes you want to wear a tracksuit, grow a beard, and chop down a tree with your bare hands.
