⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY After the neon-soaked, superhuman heights of the fourth film, Rocky V tries to bring the Italian Stallion back to his roots, but accidentally trips over its own shoelaces. Following his brutal war in Russia, Rocky discovers he has permanent brain damage and has been swindled out of his fortune by a dodgy accountant. Forced back to the grit of South Philly, he starts training a hungry young protégé named Tommy Gunn, only to realise that the kid is more interested in flashy suits and quick cash than heart and loyalty. THE PROS There is a sincere attempt to return to the grounded, street-level drama that made the 1976 original so special. Seeing Rocky back in Mickey's old gym brings a nice dose of nostalgia, and the relationship between Rocky and his son, Robert, provides some of the film's only genuine emotional weight. The final street fight is a decent change of pace from the usual boxing ring heroics; it is raw, messy, and feels a bit more like a proper Philly scrap than a choreographed sporting event. THE CONS It earns a 6/10 because it is a bit of a Stay Clear signal for anyone who loved the heroic vibe of the previous sequels. The plot feels forced, and Tommy Gunn is arguably the most annoying antagonist in the entire franchise—he lacks the charisma of Apollo or the pure menace of Clubber Lang. Rocky himself occasionally feels like a caricature of his former self, and the transition from world champion to broke trainer happens so fast it is a total head-scratcher. It misses the mark because it feels more like a depressing decline than a triumphant chapter. THE VERDICT A 6/10. Not bad if you are a completionist, but definitely not good compared to the rest of the saga. It is a bit of a wet ending to the original run of films, and even Sylvester Stallone has witty-ly admitted over the years that he was not entirely happy with how this one turned out. If you want to see Rocky at his best, stick to the first four and then skip straight to Rocky Balboa to see him reclaim his dignity. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Real Kinship: The young lad playing Rocky’s son, Robert, was actually Sage Stallone—Sylvester’s real-life son—which explains why their arguments on screen feel so authentic and sincere. • Alternative Ending: In the original script, Rocky was actually supposed to die in the street fight at the end, but the studio stepped in and demanded he survive because they realised killing off a global icon in a back alley was a bit too grim. • Heavyweight Help: Tommy "The Duke" Morrison, who played Tommy Gunn, was a real-life professional heavyweight boxer; he was cast specifically because Stallone wanted the fight scenes to look as realistic as possible. THE VIBE Like a cold, rainy day in a grey tracksuit, the smell of a damp basement gym, and the frustration of being misunderstood by your family. It is gritty, somber, and unfortunately a little bit of a let-down.
