Overview

After getting a green card in exchange for assassinating a Cuban government official, Tony Montana stakes a claim on the drug trade in Miami. Viciously murdering anyone who stands in his way, Tony eventually becomes the biggest drug lord in the state, controlling nearly all the cocaine that comes through Miami. But increased pressure from the police, wars with Colombian drug cartels and his own drug-fueled paranoia serve to fuel the flames of his eventual downfall.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Tony Montana arrives in Miami with nothing but a Cuban refugee tag and a massive chip on his shoulder. He quickly decides that washing dishes is for suckers and starts climbing the drug-lord ladder by being more violent and less reasonable than everyone else. It’s the ultimate "American Dream" story gone horribly wrong, fueled by mountains of cocaine, a questionable relationship with his sister, and a firm belief that "the world is yours" as long as you have a big enough gun. THE PROS Al Pacino goes so far "over the top" that he eventually circles back around to genius. His performance is a hurricane of rage, swearing, and that iconic, thick-as-molasses accent. Brian De Palma turns Miami into a neon-soaked, blood-stained playground where the violence is as loud as the Hawaiian shirts. The final shootout is legendary, providing a masterclass in how to end a movie with maximum carnage. It’s a tragedy wrapped in a coked-up B-movie, and it’s impossible to look away from Tony’s glorious, inevitable crash. THE CONS It is nearly three hours long, and by the second half, the constant screaming and drug use can get a bit exhausting. It’s also about as subtle as a chainsaw to the arm—Oliver Stone’s script doesn't do "nuance." If you’re looking for a hero to root for, you’re in the wrong zip code; Tony is a monster from start to finish, and the film’s depiction of the Cuban community in Miami was so controversial at the time that they had to move most of the filming to California. THE VERDICT A "Guaranteed Banger" that defined an entire era of pop culture. It’s the patron saint of hip-hop and gangster tropes for a reason. While The Godfather is a sophisticated glass of wine, Scarface is a double shot of tequila followed by a punch to the face. It’s loud, ugly, and absolutely essential viewing for anyone who likes their cinema with a high body count and zero chill. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA Screenwriter Oliver Stone wrote the script while battling his own real-life cocaine addiction, using the movie as a "farewell" to the drug. Also, despite being the definitive "Miami" movie, it was mostly shot in Los Angeles because the local Cuban population was so offended by the script that they threatened to protest the production. Oh, and Al Pacino actually burned his hand so badly on the barrel of his "little friend" during the final shootout that filming had to be shut down for two weeks. THE VIBE Like being at a disco where the floor is made of gold and the air is 40% white powder. Intense, paranoid, and spectacularly violent.
