Overview

The King of Far Far Away has died and Shrek and Fiona are to become King & Queen. However, Shrek wants to return to his cozy swamp and live in peace and quiet, so when he finds out there is another heir to the throne, they set off to bring him back to rule the kingdom.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY When King Harold croaks, Shrek becomes the reluctant heir to the throne of Far Far Away. Desperate to return to his swamp, he sets off with Donkey and Puss to find the only other possible successor: Fiona's cousin, Artie (Justin Timberlake), a high school loser. While Shrek tries to mentor the teen, Prince Charming seizes the opportunity to stage a coup, rallying a league of fairytale villains to take over the kingdom. It’s a story about the fear of fatherhood and finding your own "happily ever after," even if it means wearing a crown you never wanted. THE PROS The film is a win for its "Princess Team-Up" sequence; seeing Fiona, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty ditch the "damsel in distress" trope to kick some guard tail is a celebratory explosion of girl power. Eric Idle is a total belter as Merlin, bringing a sincere, chaotic energy to the screen. The animation quality is a sincere step up from the second film, with much more detail in the textures and backgrounds. It remains the business for a few clever gags—specifically the "frog funeral" and Puss and Donkey's soul-swap—that provide enough laughs to keep the kids entertained. THE CONS It earns a 6/10 because the plot is a bit of a head-scratcher and lacks the sharp, subversive wit that made the first two films absolute belters. Artie is a sincere bit of a dull character, and the high school setting feels like a tad of a forced "modern" gimmick that doesn't quite fit the fairytale vibe. It misses the 7/10 mark because it feels like the franchise is running on fumes, relying on repetitive jokes and a villain who just isn't as threatening or funny as the Fairy Godmother. It’s decent, but it's definitely the "low point" of the ogre’s journey. THE VERDICT A 6/10. Decent if you’re doing a marathon, but a sincere disappointment compared to its predecessors. It is a vault essential only if you’re a completionist who needs the full story.
