⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are back, but this time they’re facing a threat that makes Robotnik look like a minor annoyance. Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves) has arrived—a "Project Shadow" experiment from the 70s with a dark past and enough power to dismantle the entire team. After a brutal defeat, Team Sonic is forced into a desperate, uneasy alliance with Doctor Robotnik (Jim Carrey) to stop Shadow before he settles a decades-old grudge against humanity. It’s a globe-trotting race that takes the crew from Tokyo to London and eventually into orbit for a high-stakes showdown. THE PROS The addition of Shadow is a massive shift for the franchise, bringing a grittier, more emotional tone that fans of the games have been waiting for. Keanu Reeves is perfect as the voice of Shadow, playing him with a brooding, tragic intensity that grounds the chaos. It hits an 8 because Jim Carrey is at his manic best, playing both the classic Robotnik and his even more unhinged grandfather, Gerald. The action sequences are sharper and faster, especially the fight in Tokyo which feels like it was ripped straight from a high-budget anime. It’s an honest, high-energy sequel that manages to balance the laughs with some genuinely heavy stakes about loss and legacy. THE CONS With so many characters competing for screen time, the human cast—including James Marsden—gets pushed to the sidelines, making their subplots feel a bit thin. It stays at an 8 because the middle section can feel a bit overstuffed with exposition as it tries to explain Shadow’s complex backstory and the Robotnik family tree. It misses a higher score because the "alliance" between Sonic and Robotnik, while funny, relies on some pretty convenient plot beats to keep the two rivals on the same team. Some of the humor still leans a bit too hard into juvenile territory, which can clash with the darker, more serious moments of the film. THE VERDICT 8/10. A fast, gritty, and visually impressive finale to the trilogy. It’s an honest piece of fan service that delivers exactly what it promised: a high-stakes battle between the world's most iconic hedgehogs. Easily the best entry in the series so far. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • To keep Shadow’s appearance grounded, the animators modeled his fur texture after real-life black panthers, giving him a more predatory and dangerous look compared to Sonic’s softer design.• Jim Carrey actually plays two roles in this film—the returning Dr. Ivo Robotnik and his grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik—requiring twice the makeup and twice the improv sessions on set.• The film is heavily inspired by the 'Sonic Adventure 2' and 'Shadow the Hedgehog' games, including the tragic backstory of Maria Robotnik, which marks one of the darkest moments in the franchise's history. THE VIBE Like a sonic boom over a neon city. It smells of hot asphalt, ozone, and the metallic tang of a sparking robot.
