Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Peter Parker is still mourning the loss of Tony Stark when he heads to Europe for a school trip, hoping to finally tell MJ how he feels. His holiday is cut short when Nick Fury hijacks the bus and introduces him to Quentin Beck—a "multiversal" hero called Mysterio who claims to be fighting giant monsters called Elementals. Peter, desperate to offload the responsibility of being the "next Iron Man," hands Tony’s weaponized glasses over to Beck. It turns out the whole thing is a high-tech illusion powered by drones, and Peter has to step up and trust his "Peter Tingle" to stop Mysterio from staging a final, lethal spectacle in London. THE PROS Jake Gyllenhaal is a total win as Mysterio; he plays the "cool uncle" mentor role with a quality charm that makes the eventual betrayal punchy. The illusion sequences are epic status, especially the graveyard scene where a zombie Iron Man crawls out of the ground—it’s pure visual quality and feels like a horror movie for a split second. Tom Holland continues to be a winner, perfectly capturing the awkward teenage struggle of wanting a normal life while being a superhero. It’s a 7/10 because it’s a breezy, fun travelogue with some of the most creative action in the trilogy. The post-credits scene featuring J.K. Simmons is a massive win that left everyone reeling. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because the "Stark's legacy" plot can feel a bit sluggish and repetitive after 'Homecoming', making Peter look a bit naive for handing over billion-dollar tech to a bloke in a cape he just met. The Elementals themselves are a bit of a damp squib once you realize they’re just mindless drones, lacking the personality of Spidey’s usual rogues' gallery. It misses an 8/10 mark because the humor is sometimes quality-deficient and leans a bit too hard into "clumsy teen" tropes that we’ve seen before. Also, the stakes feel slightly less sincere when you realize the real Fury was sitting on a beach the whole time. THE VERDICT A 7/10. Decent and highly recommended for the visual effects and Gyllenhaal's performance. It’s a winner for the London battle and the shocking cliffhanger. It’s a win for the production team’s attention to detail.• Digital Dining: When Peter is scrolling through E.D.I.T.H.’s database or looking at the drone flight paths, the digital code on the holographic displays contains a hidden sushi recipe—the legendary VFX easter egg that has survived every Spider-Man movie since the 2002 original.
