⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARYA wild, space-faring comic book adventure that completely moves away from the usual bright, clean superhero formula. Based on the hit comic book run, the story follows Kara Zor-El as she travels across the galaxy to escape the shadow of her famous cousin and numb the pain of losing her home planet. Her quiet drinking trip gets completely upended when she teams up with a young alien girl named Ruthye on a gritty, planet-hopping quest for revenge against a ruthless space pirate. THE PROSMilly Alcock is absolutely brilliant as Supergirl, bringing a tough, sarcastic, and deeply human edge to the character that sets her apart from Superman completely. Craig Gillespie’s direction is a massive breath of fresh air, giving the movie a gritty, stylish look that makes the strange alien worlds feel completely unique. Jason Momoa puts in a properly fun shift as the chaotic space mercenary Lobo, stealing every single scene he is in with his laugh-out-loud, over-the-top antics. THE CONSThe movie leans heavily into a modern, indie-rock soundtrack that can occasionally feel a bit jarring during the big, emotional sci-fi moments. At just under two hours, the middle section of their space journey slows right down, spending a bit too much time on random side planets before getting back to the main hunt. The CGI on Kara's super-powered dog, Krypto, looks a bit dodgy in a few of the brighter daytime scenes. THE VERDICTA great 8/10. It is a bold, funny, and beautifully shot sci-fi western that gives the DC Universe a massive win and a fantastic new lead star. It easily earns an 8 because Milly Alcock is phenomenal, the action is heavy, and it treats the character with a proper amount of unique personality. It only misses a higher score because of a few bumpy pacing choices in the middle, but it is an absolute blast of a blockbuster.
