⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY After a mysterious five-year absence spent searching for the remains of Krypton, Superman returns to an Earth that has learned to live without him. He finds a world that has moved on: Lois Lane has a young son and a fiancé, and his greatest enemy, Lex Luthor, is out of prison with a plan to create a new continent using stolen Kryptonian crystals. Clark Kent has to navigate the heartbreak of being a literal alien in his own home while stopping Luthor’s land-grab scheme from drowning billions. THE PROS Brandon Routh is a quality choice for the Cape; he captures the humble, god-like grace of Christopher Reeve without it feeling like a cheap parody. The plane rescue sequence is an absolute masterstroke and remains one of the punchiest action scenes in superhero history. Kevin Spacey brings a darker, more menacing edge to Lex Luthor than we’d seen before, trading the campy real-estate gags for genuine malice. It’s a decent watch because it’s a beautiful, atmospheric tribute to the 1978 original, complete with the iconic John Williams score that still hits like an epic punch to the chest. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because it’s arguably too long and the middle act can feel seriously sluggish. There’s a massive lack of "super-fisticuffs"—Superman spends more time lifting heavy objects than actually fighting anyone, which makes the pacing feel a bit off for a blockbuster. The plot is a bit of a damp squib in terms of originality, as it retreads the "Luthor likes land" theme from thirty years prior. It misses a higher mark because the relationship drama with Lois and her new family occasionally feels more like a soap opera than a superhero epic. THE VERDICT A 7/10. Decent and a solid recommendation if you prefer your superheroes more "poetic" than "punchy." It’s a winner for the nostalgia and the stunning visuals. Go and watch it for that opening shuttle rescue—it’s pure quality. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Digital Resurrection: The film features the late Marlon Brando as Jor-El.
