Overview

Peter Parker is an outcast high schooler abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors, his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Seven years after the Raimi trilogy wrapped, Peter Parker is back in high school, but this time he’s a brooding, skateboard-carrying outcast with a mystery to solve. After finding his father’s old briefcase, Peter tracks down Dr. Curtis Connors, a former colleague at Oscorp who is experimenting with cross-species genetics. A bite from a genetically modified spider gives Peter incredible powers, but his attempt to help Connors regrow his missing arm backfires, transforming the scientist into a giant, rampaging Lizard. Peter has to juggle his new life as a vigilante with his crush on the brilliant Gwen Stacy and a city-wide biological threat. THE PROS Andrew Garfield is a win as Peter Parker; he brings a jittery, witty energy to the role that feels closer to the "wisecracking" Spidey from the comics. The chemistry between him and Emma Stone is epic status—it’s the beating heart of the movie and feels far more quality than the romance in previous iterations. The action is punchy, especially the high-school hallway fight which uses Spidey’s agility in a creative way. It’s a good movie because it grounds the origin story in a "low-tech" way, with Peter actually building his own mechanical web-shooters. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because we’ve already seen the Uncle Ben origin story, and sitting through it again can feel slightly sluggish in the first act. The Lizard’s design is a bit of a damp squib—he looks a bit too much like a human in a rubber mask and lacks the terrifying "beast" factor you’d expect from a giant reptile. It misses a 9/10 mark because it leans a bit too heavily on the "untold story" of Peter’s parents, which ultimately feels like a bit of a distraction from the main plot. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and highly recommended for those who want a more grounded, emotional take on the web-slinger. It’s a winner for the central performances and the realistic web-swinging. Go and watch it for the banter between Peter and Gwen—it’s pure quality. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Suit Science: To make the web-swinging look more realistic, the production used a lot of practical stunts. Andrew Garfield actually practiced parkour and worked with a team of professional gymnasts to ensure his movements looked more spider-like than human.• Eye for Detail: The lenses on Spidey’s mask were created by an actual sunglass manufacturer. They were designed with a blue tint and a hexagonal pattern to mimic the look of a spider’s compound eye.• Director's Past: Marc Webb was hired to direct primarily because of his work on the indie rom-com '(500) Days of Summer'. The studio wanted someone who could focus on the relationship between Peter and Gwen rather than just the explosions. THE VIBE Like a rainy New York rooftop. It smells like old sneakers, ozone, and chemical labs.
