⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY A loud, proud, and absolutely hilarious comedy masterpiece about the ultimate nightmare family dinner. The story follows Armand, a smooth gay drag club owner in Miami, and his ultra-dramatic partner Albert, who happens to be the club's star attraction. Chaos hits the fan when Armand's son announces he is marrying the daughter of a deeply conservative, right-wing politician. To survive the first meeting with the in-laws, the couple have to strip their flamboyant apartment bare and pretend to be a straight, traditional family, leading to an absolute mountain of frantic lies. THE PROS Robin Williams is brilliant as the stressed-out dad trying to hold the madness together, but Nathan Lane completely steals the entire show with a wonderfully camp, unhinged performance as Albert trying to pass as a masculine man. The banter is sharp as a tack, and the legendary Robin Williams dance-lesson scene is enough to leave you in stitches. Gene Hackman is also fantastic as the uptight politician, playing the ultimate clueless target for the absolute chaos unfolding around him. THE CONS The frantic final restaurant dinner scene is brilliant, but it gets stretched out a touch too far, making the pacing feel slightly exhausting right before the big reveal. Hank Azaria’s character, Agador the barefoot Guatemalan housekeeper, is incredibly funny but features a massively exaggerated accent that feels a bit dated and loud by today's standards. THE VERDICT A great 8/10. It is a timeless, laugh-out-loud classic that handles a massive high-concept farce with absolute perfection. It easily bags an 8 because the chemistry between Williams and Lane is pure magic and the script is packed with honest, golden comedy that never gets boring. It only misses out on a higher status because the chaotic buildup slows down a bit in the middle of the flat before the dinner, but it remains a proper, top-tier comedy that will leave you grinning. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Swapped Roles: Originally, Robin Williams was cast to play the flamboyant Albert, but he requested to switch to Armand because he wanted a break from playing high-energy characters and fancied playing the grounded straight man for once.• Actual Injuries: During the famous scene where Agador slips and falls over in the kitchen while carrying a pan, Hank Azaria actually took a massive, genuine tumble on the slippery floor, and the director loved the real reaction so much he kept it in the film.• Broadway Roots: The movie is a brilliant American remake of the legendary 1978 French-Italian comedy La Cage aux Folles, which was based on an incredibly successful 1973 stage play of the same name. THE VIBE Like accidentally knocking back three strong cocktails at a massive, chaotic family party where everyone is shouting over each other. It smells like white wine, heavy hairspray, and burnt shrimp appetizers. Loud, bright, and properly funny.
