Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY An absolute powerhouse of a martial arts thriller that hits like a sledgehammer. When the young daughter of former elite fighter Wang Wei is snatched by a shadowy criminal syndicate and the local police refuse to lift a finger, he decides to tear the city apart to get her back. Teaming up with Navin, a relentless journalist searching for his own missing wife, the pair embark on a bloody, skull-cracking rampage through the criminal underworld to rescue the kid and dish out some heavy-handed justice. THE PROS The martial arts choreography is otherworldly, which makes total sense given director Kenji Tanigaki’s background with world-class stunt teams. Xie Miao is spectacular as the quiet, dead-eyed father who unleashes absolute chaos with his fists, while Joe Taslim matches his intensity perfectly with some incredibly fast, brutal knife-work and grapple sequences. The action scenes are filmed with beautifully long, wide takes, completely ditching the modern Hollywood habit of shaky cameras and frantic editing to let you see every single bone-crunching impact. THE CONS The narrative itself is a fairly standard revenge blueprint that borrows heavily from Taken and The Raid, offering very few surprises in the story department. The villains are mostly one-dimensional caricatures who exist solely to get kicked through walls, leaving the plot feeling a bit thin between the major set pieces. THE VERDICT A great 8/10. It is a jaw-dropping action spectacle that delivers some of the finest hand-to-hand combat seen on screen in years. It comfortably hits an 8 because the stunts are breathtaking, the pacing is completely relentless, and it gives fans exactly what they want without trying to overcomplicate the simple premise. A magnificent option for a weekend watch if you want pure, unadulterated martial arts bliss.
