Overview

Set in post-WWII New York, it follows the aging patriarch Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) as he attempts to steer his Mafia empire through a changing world. When an assassination attempt leaves Vito incapacitated, his youngest son Michael (Al Pacino)—a decorated war hero who wanted nothing to do with the "family business"—is pulled into a spiral of violence and revenge. It’s a tragedy dressed as a gangster flick, showing the slow, chilling transformation of a good man into a ruthless Don. THE PROS This is a 10/10 because it’s the definition of "Epic Status." Marlon Brando’s performance is legendary, turning the "Godfather" into a figure of quiet, terrifying gravity. Al Pacino is equally brilliant, delivering a sincere and subtle performance that makes Michael’s descent feel honest and inevitable. The cinematography by Gordon Willis is a winner, using deep shadows and low-light interiors to make the Corleone world feel both intimate and suffocating. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • The Stray Cat: The famous cat sitting in Don Corleone's lap during the opening scene was actually a stray that Coppola found wandering the Paramount lot. It wasn't in the script, and its purring was so loud that Brando’s lines had to be re-recorded in post-production. • Real Terror: In the famous "horse head" scene, the actor John Marley wasn't told that a real horse's head (sourced from a dog-food factory) would be used for the final take. His scream of horror in the film is entirely real and honest. • Mooning Contest: To break the tension on set, Marlon Brando, James Caan, and Robert Duvall engaged in a "mooning" competition. Brando eventually won by baring his backside in the middle of the massive wedding reception scene, earning a trophy from the cast. THE VIBE Like a dark office on a sunny day.
