⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY If you are looking for a light-hearted romp to watch while eating your dinner, keep scrolling, because The Green Mile will absolutely wreck you. Set in a 1930s Louisiana prison, it follows death row supervisor Paul Edgecomb as he meets John Coffey, a giant of a man with a gentle soul and a supernatural gift for healing. It is a three-hour journey through the best and worst of humanity, where miracles happen in the shadow of the electric chair. THE PROS Michael Clarke Duncan gives a performance so sincere and heart-wrenching it should be studied in schools; he is the absolute heartbeat of the movie. Tom Hanks is at his peak reliable everyman best, and the supporting cast of guards makes you wish they were your actual mates. Then there is Mr. Jingles, the most talented mouse in cinema history, who somehow manages to steal scenes from Oscar winners. The way the film balances the grim reality of prison life with moments of genuine, jaw-dropping wonder is nothing short of masterful. THE CONS It lands a 9/10 because, let’s be honest, three hours is a massive shift for anyone's backside, and the pacing definitely leans into a Languid Burn at times. It is also quite possibly one of the saddest movies ever made, so if you are not in the mood for a throat-achy cry, you might want to save it for a day when you are feeling emotionally bulletproof. Also, Percy Wetmore is such a slimy, detestable character that you will probably want to put your foot through the screen every time he appears. THE VERDICT A 9/10. This is an outstanding movie that sits firmly in the Must Watch category. It is a genuine, masterfully crafted belter that stays with you long after the credits roll. Go and watch this movie because we are telling you it is epic—just make sure you have a industrial-sized box of tissues and maybe a supportive hug waiting for you at the end. It is a vault essential that proves some stories are worth every single minute of their runtime. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • The Willis Assist: The producers were struggling to find the right man to play John Coffey until Bruce Willis—who had just worked with Michael Clarke Duncan on Armageddon—personally called the director and told him he had found his guy.• Mouse Magic: It took a literal team of 15 to 30 trained mice to play the role of Mr. Jingles, with each little actor specializing in a different trick to make the character feel real.• Tall Tales: Despite looking like a literal giant on screen, Michael Clarke Duncan was actually slightly shorter than his co-star James Cromwell; the crew had to use clever camera angles and blocking to make him tower over everyone else.
