Overview

Following Smaug's attack on Laketown, Bilbo and the dwarves try to defend Erebor's mountain of treasure from others who claim it: the men of the ruined Laketown and the elves of Mirkwood. Meanwhile an army of Orcs led by Azog the Defiler is marching on Erebor, fueled by the rise of the dark lord Sauron. ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY If you have spent the last few years following a bunch of dwarves across Middle-earth, this is the finish line. The Battle of the Five Armies picks up exactly where the last one left off—with a very angry dragon about to turn a lake-side village into a barbecue. Once that is settled, the story shifts to the Lonely Mountain, where Thorin has gone a bit mad with "gold sickness," leading to a massive, multi-army scrap involving elves, orcs, and some very aggressive bats. It is essentially a feature-length battle scene that tries to tie up every loose end before the events of the original trilogy kick off. THE PROS Martin Freeman is still the absolute business as Bilbo; he brings a much-needed sense of sanity and heart to a film that is mostly full of CGI monsters and shouting. The action set-pieces are genuinely jaw-dropping, especially the one-on-one duel between Thorin and Azog on the cracking ice. It is a celebratory explosion of visual effects that makes you feel like you are right in the thick of the chaos. Plus, seeing the White Council—including Galadriel and Saruman—go full "superhero" on some wraiths at Dol Guldur is a sincere highlight for any Tolkien fan. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because it feels like a bit of a Languid Burn that has been stretched too thin. Turning a single chapter of a book into a two-and-a-half-hour movie means there is a lot of "padding," including a love triangle that feels a bit wet and meh. Some of the CGI, particularly on the dwarf armies and a certain gravity-defying Legolas bridge-run, looks more like a video game than a film. It is not bad, but compared to the emotional weight of The Return of the King, this finale feels a bit empty and focused more on the spectacle than the soul. THE VERDICT A 7/10. Not bad, but not quite the epic status masterpiece we were hoping for. It is a decent conclusion that delivers on the "battle" promise, but it lacks the magic of the earlier films. If you are a Middle-earth completionist, it is a vault essential, but for the casual viewer, it might feel like a bit of a slog.
