⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Set 183 years before the original trilogy, this anime prequel tells the story of Helm Hammerhand (Brian Cox), the legendary King of Rohan. When a sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for his father’s death, forces the Rohirrim into a desperate last stand, Helm and his people must retreat to the ancient fortress of the Hornburg. The focus shifts to Helm’s daughter, Héra (Gaia Wise), who must find the grit to lead her people against an enemy intent on their total destruction. THE PROS The shift to anime is a bold choice that pays off, allowing for massive, sweeping battles and mythical creatures that would be nearly impossible to film in live-action. It hits an 8 because the action is visceral and fast-paced, capturing the brutal nature of Middle-earth warfare with total honesty. Brian Cox is perfect as Helm, bringing a rugged, booming authority to the role that makes the legend feel real. It’s a smart expansion of Tolkien’s lore that focuses on the "human" side of the struggle, showing the cost of war and the weight of a crown without needing wizards or rings to keep it interesting. THE CONS The pacing can be a bit frantic, jumping through years of conflict in a way that might leave casual fans a bit dizzy. It stays at an 8 because while the animation style is striking, some of the character designs occasionally feel a bit flat compared to the stunning, detailed backgrounds. It misses a higher mark because the villain, Wulf, while motivated, can fall into some predictable "revenge" tropes that we’ve seen plenty of times before. The connection to the main trilogy feels a bit forced in the final scenes, as if the movie is trying too hard to remind you why you’re watching a Lord of the Rings story. THE VERDICT 8/10.
