⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 4/10 THE SUMMARY The long-awaited wedding of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen finally arrives, followed by a romantic honeymoon on a private Brazilian island. However, the dream turns into a nightmare when Bella discovers she’s pregnant with a rapidly developing hybrid child. As the fetus literally begins to consume her from the inside out, a rift forms between the Cullens and Jacob’s wolf pack, who see the unborn creature as a lethal threat that must be destroyed. Bella refuses to give up the baby, leading to a gruesome, house-bound standoff as her health fails and the wolves prepare for an all-out assault on the Cullen estate. THE PROS The wedding sequence is a winner for fans; it’s filmed with a sincere, lush beauty that captures the "epic" feel of the franchise's climax. Kristen Stewart puts in a quality performance during the pregnancy scenes, effectively portraying a woman who is physically wasting away; the makeup work to make her look skeletal and sickly is punchy and genuinely unsettling. It’s a 4/10 because Bill Condon brings a more mature, gothic horror aesthetic to the birth sequence, which is easily the most visceral and memorable part of the film. The score by Carter Burwell is quality, bringing back the melancholic themes from the first movie that give the drama some needed weight. THE CONS It earns a 4/10 because the pacing is a bit of a damp squib; the first hour is essentially just an extended wedding video followed by a lot of awkward honeymoon small talk that feels slightly sluggish. The dialogue remains a bit quality-deficient, full of overly dramatic declarations of love that can feel unintentionally funny. It misses a higher mark because the "imprinting" plot point with Jacob and the baby is a bit of a head-scr—I mean, a very weird narrative choice that feels uncomfortable and forced. The wolf pack’s "telepathic" conversations are also a bit of a damp squib, featuring some distracting CGI and voiceover work that pulls you out of the tension. THE VERDICT A 4/10. Below average and really only recommended for the hardcore fanbase. It’s a winner for its horror-leaning second half, but the first hour is a bit of a slog. Go and watch it for the "birth" scene—it’s a quality bit of practical horror in an otherwise soapy romance. The production used a mix of thin prosthetics and digital "slimming" effects in post-production to make her collarbones and cheeks look dangerously sunken. • Honeymoon Mishap: While filming the honeymoon scenes in Brazil, the production was plagued by heavy rain and paparazzi. Fans actually tracked down the private island location using Google Earth, forcing the crew to hire extra security to keep the "sincere" romantic moments from being leaked online.
