⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 4/10 THE SUMMARY On her 18th birthday, Bella Swan suffers a minor paper cut at the Cullen house, which nearly leads to her being eaten by a hungry Jasper. Realizing that being a vampire's girlfriend is essentially a high-stakes death wish, Edward breaks up with her and vanishes, leaving Bella in a catatonic state of depression. To cope with the "hole in her chest," she becomes a thrill-seeker, discovering that danger triggers hallucinations of Edward’s voice. She finds comfort in her growing friendship with Jacob Black, who is hiding a furry secret of his own. When a massive misunderstanding leads Edward to believe Bella is dead, he heads to Italy to provoke the Volturi into killing him, forcing Bella and Alice into a race against time to stop him. THE PROS Michael Sheen is an absolute winner as Aro—he brings a campy, high-pitched energy that is pure quality and steals every second of the Italy sequence. Director Chris Weitz gives the film a much more polished, cinematic look than the first one, with a warm, sumptuously lit color palette that makes the scenery pop. Taylor Lautner is a punchy highlight here; he put in a sincere amount of work at the gym to keep his role, and his version of Jacob brings a warmth and humanity that the movie desperately needs during Edward's long absence. It’s a 4/10 because the soundtrack is epic status, featuring artists like Thom Yorke and Bon Iver that perfectly capture the "moody teenager" vibe. THE CONS It earns a 4/10 because the pacing is a proper slog; at over 130 minutes, you spend a massive amount of time watching Bella stare out of windows while the months change, which can feel incredibly sluggish. The central premise—that Bella’s entire world ends because a boy dumped her—is a bit of a damp squib in terms of character development. It misses a higher mark because the CGI wolves, while better than the first film's effects, still look a bit quality-deficient in the daylight scenes. The dialogue is often risible and melodramatic, leading to plenty of "unintentional comedy" moments that pull you out of the sincere tragedy the film is trying to portray. THE VERDICT A 4/10. Below average and really only for those who are deep in the "Team Jacob" or "Team Edward" trenches. It’s a winner for the Volturi introduction and the soundtrack, but the middle hour is a bit of a damp squib. Go and watch it if you want to see Michael Sheen having a proper laugh, but be prepared for a lot of staring and sighing—it’s quality-deficient in the "stuff actually happening" department. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • The Audition Save: Taylor Lautner was almost recast for this movie because the director wanted someone "larger" to reflect Jacob's growth. Taylor spent months eating 4,000 calories a day and lifting heavy to gain 30 lbs of muscle, eventually showing up to his screen test so buff they had no choice but to keep him. • Accidental Shout: During the scene in Italy where Bella is trying to stop Edward from stepping into the sunlight, Kristen Stewart reportedly accidentally yelled "Robert!" instead of "Edward!" during one of the takes. • The "Chuckesmee" Precursor: While the creepy CGI baby doesn't show up until the finale, the "Edward Hallucinations" in this film were a quality-deficient technical challenge. Robert Pattinson had to film his scenes separately against a green screen so he could be layered over Bella's scenes as a shimmering, translucent ghost. THE VIBE Like a rainy afternoon in a cold forest while listening to a breakup playlist. It smells like wet fur, old paper, and motor oil.

THE SUMMARY
