⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 10/10 THE SUMMARY Thirty years later, Maverick is still a Captain, still breaking Mach limits, and still making admirals want to pull their hair out. He’s called back to TOPGUN to train a group of elite graduates—including Rooster, the son of his late wingman Goose—for a suicide mission that requires flying through a "miracle" window. It’s a movie about aging, legacy, and the fact that sometimes the old dog actually knows better tricks than the drone-obsessed kids. THE PROS This is the gold standard for sequels. It takes the 80s nostalgia of the original and injects it with actual, high-stakes emotion. The flight sequences are bone-rattling; because they filmed the actors in real F-18s pulling actual G-force, you can see the skin pulling back on their faces. It’s a "Guaranteed Banger" because it’s a pure, theatrical spectacle that reminds you why we go to the movies. The reunion scene with Val Kilmer’s Iceman is also a genuine tear-jerker that handles real-life tragedy with total class. THE CONS The plot is basically a beat-for-beat remake of the Star Wars Death Star run, right down to the "exhaust port" target. If you’re looking for a complex geopolitical villain, you won’t find one—the enemy is just a nameless, faceless "rogue nation" that exists solely to be blown up. Also, the romantic subplot with Jennifer Connelly is fine, but it feels like it’s mostly there to give Maverick something to do when he’s not in a cockpit. THE VERDICT A rare "Perfect 10" that surpasses the original in every possible way. It’s a love letter to aviation and a masterclass in blockbuster filmmaking. It’s the kind of movie that makes you want to cheer at the screen and then go home and do 500 push-ups. If you haven't seen this on the biggest screen possible, you’re doing life wrong. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA Tom Cruise designed a grueling "boot camp" for the younger actors to get them used to G-forces so they wouldn't vomit on the expensive IMAX cameras. They also had to learn how to operate the lighting and cameras themselves while in the air because there was no room for a crew. Also, the "darkstar" jet seen in the beginning looked so realistic that Chinese satellites reportedly repositioned themselves to get a better look at what they thought was a real secret US aircraft. THE VIBE Like a victory lap at Mach 2. Pure adrenaline, high-fives, and the feeling of a sunset that never quite ends. Supercharged and legendary.
