⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 10/10 THE SUMMARY If Toy Story 4 was a lovely little extra chapter, Toy Story 3 is the undisputed grand finale that left an entire generation of adults weeping in the dark. Andy is heading off to university, and his loyal toys find themselves accidentally donated to Sunnyside Daycare. What looks like a tropical paradise at first quickly turns into a prison drama, complete with a dictatorial bear who smells like strawberries and a high-stakes escape plan. It is a profound, beautifully written look at the pain of letting go and the power of sticking together. THE PROS This is Pixar at the absolute peak of their powers, balancing genuinely hilarious physical comedy with existential dread that would make a philosopher sweat. The introduction of Ken—played with brilliant, flamboyant vanity by Michael Keaton—is a absolute win and provides some of the funniest moments in the entire trilogy. Then there is the incinerator scene, a sincere and harrowing moment of cinematic bravery that proves these films have more heart than most "adult" dramas. It is a masterclass in pacing, taking you from a high-speed train heist to a heartbreaking goodbye without ever missing a beat. THE CONS It is a 10/10, so finding a fault is like trying to find a flaw in a diamond, but if you are easily traumatised, Lotso might actually give you nightmares. He is arguably one of the most ruthless villains in Disney history, and his backstory is a bit of a throat-achey tragedy that might be a bit heavy for the very little ones. It is also quite possibly the most emotionally draining "kids" film ever made, so do not watch it unless you are prepared to feel like your heart has been through a blender by the time the credits roll. THE VERDICT A 10/10. This is epic status. It is a genuine masterpiece and arguably the greatest conclusion to a film trilogy ever made. It is the ultimate "go and watch this because we are telling you it is epic" recommendation. A vault essential that transcends animation to become a universal story about life, loss, and friendship. If you can watch the final scene where Andy says goodbye to Woody without a lump in your throat, you might actually be made of plastic yourself. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • The Trash Cameo: If you look closely at the bin man who appears early in the film, you will see he is wearing a very familiar black t-shirt with a skull on it—that is a grown-up Sid, the terrifying bully from the first film, still making a living around rubbish.• Ghibli Greeting: In a lovely nod to the masters of Japanese animation, a large Totoro plush toy from Studio Ghibli’s My Neighbour Totoro appears as one of Bonnie’s toys and even shares a scene with Woody.• Reunion Record: To capture the perfect bickering energy between Woody and Buzz, Tom Hanks and Tim Allen actually recorded their lines together in the same room for this film, which is quite rare for animated features. THE VIBE Like an old photo album you found in the loft, the smell of a childhood bedroom, and a heavy, bittersweet ache in your chest. It is nostalgic, terrifying, and ultimately hopeful. It makes you want to ring your mum, find your old teddy bear, and never, ever take a strawberry-scented hug for granted.
