⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 10/10 THE SUMMARY This is the one that started it all and changed the face of cinema forever. Back in 1995, Pixar gave us a glimpse into the secret life of toys when humans aren't looking. We follow Woody, a cowboy who is top dog in Andy's bedroom, until the flashy, deluded space ranger Buzz Lightyear arrives and throws the whole social hierarchy into chaos. It is a classic buddy-cop story at its heart, featuring two rivals who have to set aside their differences to survive the clutches of a sadistic neighbour and find their way back home. THE PROS The writing is absolute gold; the banter between Tom Hanks and Tim Allen is the business and established a comedic template that almost every animated film has tried to copy since. It manages to be genuinely funny for adults while keeping the little ones completely hooked. The character design is a absolute win—every toy has a distinct personality, from the neurotic Rex to the dry-witted Hamm. Most importantly, it has a sincere emotional core; the moment Buzz realises he can't actually fly is one of the most poignant scenes in animation history. It is a masterclass in world-building that still feels fresh over thirty years later. THE CONS It is a 10/10 so we are splitting hairs here, but if you look at it with modern eyes, the human characters—especially Andy and Sid—look a bit like they’ve been carved out of cursed ham. The technology was brand new at the time, so the skin textures and hair are a bit wet and stiff compared to the photorealism of the later films. However, the toys themselves still look fantastic because, well, they are meant to be made of plastic. THE VERDICT A 10/10. This is epic status and a genuine cinematic landmark. It is the definition of a vault essential and the ultimate "go and watch this because we are telling you it is epic" recommendation. Without this film, the last three decades of animation would look very different. It is a perfectly crafted story about friendship, jealousy, and belonging that will literally never go out of fashion. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Gritty Origins: In the very early drafts of the script, Woody was actually a bit of a mean-spirited jerk who intentionally threw Buzz out of the window, but the creators realised nobody would like a hero who was that much of a villain.• Name Game: Buzz Lightyear was almost called Lunar Larry, which doesn't quite have the same heroic ring to it, while Woody was named after the veteran Western actor Woody Strode.• Billy Crystal's Regret: Billy Crystal was originally offered the voice of Buzz Lightyear but turned it down; after seeing the finished film, he called it the biggest mistake of his career, though he eventually joined Pixar as Mike Wazowski in Monsters, Inc. THE VIBE Like the smell of a brand new box of Lego, the sound of a pull-string catchphrase, and the pure joy of a childhood Saturday morning. It is heroic, witty, and full of wonder. It makes you want to look over your shoulder every time you leave your bedroom and always check your name is still written on the bottom of your boot.
