Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Eddie Brock is a hot-shot investigative reporter in San Francisco whose life hits the skids after he tries to take down the billionaire CEO of the Life Foundation, Carlton Drake. While breaking into Drake’s lab, Eddie bonds with an oily, sentient alien parasite known as a symbiote. This voice in his head, calling itself Venom, has a penchant for biting heads off and a massive ego. The two become an unlikely duo as they try to stop Drake from bonding with an even more dangerous symbiote named Riot and bringing an entire invasion force to Earth. THE PROS Tom Hardy is an absolute win; his unhinged, sweaty performance is what makes this an 8/10. The way he argues with himself while climbing into a lobster tank in a fancy restaurant is pure quality. When Venom finally shows up in full, the design is epic—it’s the hulking, toothy beast fans have wanted for years. The action is punchy, especially the motorcycle chase through the hills of San Fran where the symbiote limbs are whipping around to take out mercenaries. It’s a good movie because it leans fully into the "buddy-cop" humor between a man and his parasite, making it a total winner for anyone who doesn't take their superhero movies too seriously. THE CONS It misses a 9/10 because the first act can feel slightly sluggish, taking its time to actually get to the "Venom" part of the movie. Riz Ahmed is a great actor, but his villain is a bit of a damp squib—just another generic evil billionaire with a god complex. The final battle between Venom and Riot is a bit of a blurry CGI mess; it’s basically two piles of grey and black goo fighting in the dark, which feels a bit quality-deficient compared to the rest of the film. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and highly recommended if you want to see Tom Hardy go full weirdo. It’s a winner for the character dynamic alone and way more fun than the critics gave it credit for. Go and watch it for the "mask... copy" scene—it’s quality. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Lobster Luck: The famous scene where Eddie jumps into the restaurant lobster tank wasn't in the script. Hardy saw the tank on set and asked the director if he could jump in, forcing the production to quickly reinforce the glass and fill it with lukewarm water.• Voice Acting: Tom Hardy actually recorded Venom’s lines every morning before filming. The sound engineers would then play those lines back to him through a hidden earpiece during the scenes so he could have a real-time, improvised conversation with the "alien" in his head.• Digital Secret: In the background monitors of the Life Foundation labs, the scrolling data actually contains a digital "sushi recipe"—a legendary Easter egg hidden by the VFX team as a nod to their work on other major blockbusters. THE VIBE Like a chaotic street-food snack. It smells like wet asphalt, tater tots, and raw liver.
