    Walk the Line (2005) Rating: 10/10 Most musical biopics are just expensive Wikipedia pages with better hair, but this is the rare exception that actually has a soul. It’s a raw, sweaty, pill-popping journey through the life of a man who wore black not because it was trendy, but because he was perpetually one bad day away from a funeral. THE SUMMARY We follow Johnny Cash from his dirt-poor beginnings in Arkansas to the hallowed, booze-soaked stage of Folsom Prison. Along the way, he discovers that fame is a nightmare, amphetamines are a hell of a drug, and the only thing more dangerous than his addiction is his relentless, decades-long obsession with June Carter. It’s a love story wrapped in a prison riot, set to the beat of a freight train. THE PROS Joaquin Phoenix doesn't just "play" Johnny Cash; he looks like he’s being possessed by him. He did his own singing, and that gravelly baritone is so spot-on it’s spooky. But the real heist here is Reese Witherspoon as June Carter—she’s the spitfire anchor that keeps the movie from spiraling into a total depression-fest. Their chemistry is so thick you could cut it with a guitar string. It’s a perfect look at the cost of being an icon. THE CONS If I’m being a hater for the sake of it: the movie definitely follows the "biopic formula" (childhood trauma, rise to fame, drug spiral, redemption). We’ve seen the "Johnny sinks into a lake of self-pity" trope before, but because the performances are so elite, you almost don't care that you know exactly what’s coming next. THE VERDICT A certified 10/10. It’s the gold standard for how to tell a musician’s story without making it feel like a cheesy TV movie. Even if you hate country music, you’ll walk away wanting to buy a black suit and start a fight with a tractor. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA Joaquin Phoenix is such a dedicated weirdo that he insisted everyone on set call him "J.R." (Johnny's birth name) and refused to be helped with his guitar. Also, during the famous Folsom Prison scene, the "inmates" were played by actual locals who were instructed to look as miserable as possible—not hard to do when you’re stuck in a room with Joaquin Phoenix screaming about his father for twelve hours. THE VIBE Bourbon and heartbreak. It feels like sitting in the back of a smoky dive bar in 1968, watching someone’s life fall apart in the most beautiful way possible. Best watched with the volume turned up loud enough to make the neighbors worry.
