Overview

On the brink of the First World War, Albert's beloved horse Joey is sold to the Cavalry by his father. Against the backdrop of the Great War, Joey begins an odyssey full of danger, joy, and sorrow, and he transforms everyone he meets along the way. ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Directed by Steven Spielberg, this 2011 epic is essentially Saving Private Ryan if the protagonist had four legs and a tail. Set during World War I, the story follows Joey, a spirited bay horse raised by a young farm boy named Albert (Jeremy Irvine). When Albert’s father sells Joey to the British cavalry to pay the rent, we embark on an episodic journey across the battlefields of Europe. Joey passes through the hands of British officers, German soldiers, and a French girl, serving as a silent witness to the carnage and the flickers of humanity found in the mud of the Great War. THE PROS The cinematography is a "Guaranteed Banger." Spielberg and his longtime collaborator Janusz Kamiński make the English countryside and the hellish No Man’s Land look like living oil paintings. The technical craft is top-tier; the "Barbed Wire" sequence is a masterclass in tension and heart-wrenching sound design. It also features an incredible "before they were famous" British cast, including Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston as dashing officers. It’s a movie that wears its heart on its sleeve, celebrating nobility and the unbreakable bond between man and animal without needing a single word of dialogue from the "lead actor." THE CONS It is aggressively sentimental. If you aren't a fan of "The Spielberg Touch" (soaring John Williams scores, golden-hour sunsets, and earnest tear-jerking), this might feel a bit too manipulative for you. Some critics found the episodic structure a bit disjointed, as we leave interesting human characters behind just as we start to like them. It’s an 8/10 because while it’s a visual Masterpiece, the "miracle horse" trope—where every single soldier on both sides of the war stops to coo over Joey—can feel a little thick even for the most dedicated animal lovers. It’s a sweeping, old-fashioned epic that reminds us why we go to the cinema: to see big stories told on a big scale. It’s a beautiful tribute to the millions of horses that never came home from the front, and it’ll leave you reaching for the tissues by the time the sun sets over Dartmoor. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA Joey was actually played by 14 different horses to portray him at various ages and emotional states, with the "hero" horse named Finder doing most of the heavy lifting. Also, Jeremy Irvine (Albert) was a complete unknown when cast; he actually contracted trench foot for real while filming the muddy war scenes to keep things authentic. Fun fact: Spielberg was so committed to practical effects that only about three shots in the entire film use digital enhancement—the rest, including the terrifying charge into German lines, featured real horses and over 5,800 extras. THE VIBE Like an old leather saddle—warm, worn-in, and sturdy. It’s a film that feels timeless, carrying the weight of history and the soft glow of a home you’re desperate to return to.
