Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are back, but their partnership is pushed to the limit when they’re assigned to the "Partners in Crisis" counseling program after a high-speed chase ends in disaster. Their redemption comes in the form of Gary De’Snake (Ke Huy Quan), a sweet but highly venomous blue pit viper who is the first reptile to show up in the mammal-dominated metropolis. Gary is a fugitive on a mission to clear his family name and expose a conspiracy involving the city’s founding "Lynxley" family. The trio goes undercover at the high-society Zootennial Gala to uncover the truth about Zootopia’s history and the "Weather Walls" that keep the city’s biomes functioning. THE PROS Ke Huy Quan is a total winner as Gary; he brings a sincere, optimistic energy that makes a 33-foot-long venomous snake feel like a lovable underdog. The world-building is epic status once again, finally taking us into the "Marsh Market" and showing how reptiles and amphibians have been sidelined in Zootopian society. It’s an 8/10 because it tackles heavy themes like gentrification and xenophobia with a punchy, clever wit that doesn't feel like a lecture. The dynamic between Nick and Judy remains quality, especially with the added friction of Judy’s "reckless" driving and Nick’s hidden insecurities. Andy Samberg as Pawbert Lynxley provides some quality comedy, playing a "Succession-coded" heir who is way too broad-minded for his own corrupt family. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the "Partners in Crisis" subplot can feel slightly sluggish in the middle act, taking up room that could have been used to explore more of the new reptilian districts. While the mystery is engaging, the "Lynxley" villains feel a bit like a damp squib compared to the shocking twist of Mayor Bellwether in the first film. It misses a 9/10 mark because some of the slapstick—like the bit where Gary’s fang gets lodged in Bogo’s head—is a bit more "minion-humor" than the sharp, satirical comedy of the original. At 108 minutes, the finale feels a bit rushed as they try to wrap up a century-old conspiracy and a massive lizard uprising all at once. THE VERDICT An 8/10.
