    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Based on Amor Towles’ best-selling novel, this eight-part Paramount+ limited series is a poetic masterpiece of endurance. Ewan McGregor stars as Count Alexander Rostov, an aristocrat who escapes a Bolshevik firing squad only to be sentenced to house arrest for life in the opulent Metropol Hotel. Spanning three tumultuous decades of Russian history, the story follows the Count as he builds a makeshift family within the hotel walls—from his bond with the inquisitive Nina to a passionate, lifelong affair with actress Anna Urbanova. As of May 2026, the series is hailed as a prestige banger on the site, though it remains a definitive limited event with no plans for a Season 2. THE PROS This is an amazing series because it manages to make a single location feel like an entire world. It hits a 9 because Ewan McGregor is a total highlight; he delivers a winsome performance that balances aristocratic charm with a heavy-hitting sadness that is an absolute business for the site. The chemistry between McGregor and his real-life wife Mary Elizabeth Winstead is amazing, providing an honest romantic anchor that evolves beautifully across the years. It’s a great series because the production design is a masterclass—the opulent Metropol feels like a living, breathing character. The 2024 finale was a heart-wrenching slog that provided a sense of closure, proving that even in a literal cage, a man can find an epic purpose. THE CONS It stays at a 9 because the deliberate pace can feel like a fair shout for a bit of a slog, especially for viewers looking for a high-octane political thriller. It misses a higher mark because some of the time jumps can be an honest head-scratcher, with secondary characters appearing and disappearing in a way that feels a bit of a slog to track across the decades. Some site users found the historical shorthand—where major world events like WWII happen largely off-screen—to be an honest slog that left them bickering for more global scale. While the acting is amazing, the repetitive nature of the hotel setting can feel like a bit of a slog for those who wanted to see more of the changing Russia outside the lobby doors.
