Overview

A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros: a young, naive but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Set roughly 90 years before the events of *Game of Thrones*, this series follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey), a humble hedge knight with more heart than coin, and his diminutive but remarkably sharp-witted squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell). Far from the sprawling dynastic wars and dragonfire of other Westeros stories, this is a more personal, street-level journey. As the pair travel to the Ashford Tourney, they find themselves caught in a dangerous conflict involving Targaryen princes, knightly honor, and the realization that being a true hero in a world of complex politics is a pained and difficult road. THE PROS This is a great series because it proves that smaller can actually be better in the *Game of Thrones* universe. It hits a 9 because the chemistry between Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell is amazing; their "big man, little boy" dynamic is a total highlight and brings an honest, human heart back to Westeros. The production is top-tier, capturing the vibrant and slightly more hopeful era of the Targaryen dynasty with a sincere touch. It’s a smart adaptation that leans into the buddy-comedy elements of the novellas while still delivering the heavy emotional blows the franchise is known for. The focus on chivalry and the lives of the "smallfolk" is a fair shout for the most refreshing change of pace we've seen in years. THE CONS It stays at a 9 because the smaller scale might feel like a bit of a slog for viewers who are strictly here for the massive dragon battles and global stakes of *House of the Dragon*. It misses a perfect 10 because the shorter, six-episode format means some of the secondary knights at the Ashford Tourney don't get much breathing room, making their fates feel a bit less pained than they could have been. A few moments of "bodily humor" in the early episodes were an honest head-scratcher for some fans and felt a bit jarring compared to the usual high-fantasy tone. While the writing is amazing, the sheer amount of Targaryen family lore might be a bit of a struggle for casual viewers who can't keep their Daerons and Aerions straight. THE VERDICT 9/10. An amazing, heartfelt, and beautifully shot return to Westeros. It’s a great series that trades dragons for real human connections, and it is a fair shout for the most charming entry in the entire franchise. Martin was so impressed with the first season that he reportedly handed the showrunners unpublished notes and stories about Dunk and Egg to ensure the future of the series stays honest to his vision.• The Dornish puppeteer Tanselle is a central figure in the first season; the production actually hired professional puppeteers to design and operate the elaborate dragon puppets seen in her performances to make the scene feel authentic to the period. THE VIBE Like a campfire in a dark forest. It smells of horse tack, roasted meat, and the metallic tang of a well-worn suit of armor.
