⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Set in 1857 during the Utah War, this gritty six-part Netflix miniseries follows the violent birth of the American West. The story centers on Sara Rowell (Betty Gilpin), a woman fleeing a dark past with her young son Devin, as they navigate a landscape where survival is the only law. Their journey collides with a wide cast of characters, including a weary tracker (Taylor Kitsch), a ruthless bounty hunter (Jai Courtney), and a devout Mormon couple (Dane DeHaan and Saura Lightfoot-Leon) caught in the middle of a holy war. As the Mormon Militia clashes with indigenous tribes and the U.S. government, every character is forced to pay a pained price for their search for a new home. THE PROS This is an amazing series because it completely strips away the "heroic" veneer of the classic Western to show something much more pained and honest. It hits an 8 because the casting is a total highlight; Betty Gilpin is amazing as Sara, bringing a fierce, desperate energy to the screen, while Shea Whigham’s portrayal of the real-life legend Jim Bridger adds a sincere sense of history. The direction by Peter Berg is smart and visceral, making the Utah wilderness feel like a fair shout for the most dangerous character in the show. It’s a great series because it doesn't flinch from the pained reality of the era—the costumes, the language, and the brutal "mountain man" lifestyle feel entirely honest to the period. THE CONS It stays at an 8 because the unrelenting bleakness can feel like a bit of a slog for those who prefer their Westerns with a bit more hope. It misses a higher mark because the sheer number of subplots—from the Mormon leadership to the Shoshone Wolf Clan—can be an honest head-scratcher to track in just six episodes. The pacing is a fair shout for erratic, with some episodes feeling like a slow pained crawl and others rushing through massive character deaths. While the violence is amazing for realism, it can be a pained bit excessive at times, leaning into a "squid game in the dirt" vibe that might feel a bit of a slog for a general audience. THE VERDICT 8/10. A smart, harrowing, and visually stunning epic. It’s an amazing achievement that stays honest to the blood-soaked roots of the American frontier.
