⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY A trio of mismatched podcasters—a cheery American optimist, a cynical investigative journalist, and a stressed-out researcher—roll into a picturesque Irish coastal town to investigate a decades-old disappearance. They’re looking for a "juicy" true crime story for their listeners, but the locals aren’t exactly rolling out the red carpet. As the team digs beneath the surface of the annual Samhain festival, they find that the town's quirky charm hides a very real, very modern criminal underworld. It’s a dark comedy thriller that mocks the "true crime" craze while delivering a genuine mystery of its own. THE PROS This is a 7/10 because it nails the satiric tone of the podcasting world. Siobhán Cullen is the standout as Dove, the grumpy journalist who treats the podcast like a demotion, and her deadpan delivery provides the perfect contrast to the "everything is content" attitude of the other leads. The scenery is stunning, and the show does a great job of playing with Irish stereotypes before subverting them in the most violent ways possible. It’s a winner because it manages to be funny and unsettling at the same time, keeping you guessing about who is actually a villain and who is just a weirdo. THE CONS It misses an 8/10 because the middle section can feel a bit aimless. Some of the subplots involving the local nun and the tech-bro yoga retreat feel a bit like filler that distracts from the core mystery of the missing people. It settles at a 7 because, while the banter is top-tier, the final reveal doesn't quite have the massive impact you’d hope for after several hours of build-up. It’s a great, easy watch, but it doesn't quite reach the heights of something like Only Murders in the Building. THE VERDICT A solid 7/10. It’s a witty, beautifully shot, and slightly twisted mystery that is perfect for a weekend binge. It isn't an 8 because the pacing gets a bit baggy in the middle, but for anyone who loves a "stranger in a small town" story with a bit of bite, it’s a total winner. It’s the perfect antidote to the overly serious true-crime docs that fill our feeds. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Meta Casting: Will Forte, who plays the podcast host Gilbert, actually hosts several popular comedy podcasts in real life. He used his experience with the "perpetually excited" tone of American podcasters to make Gilbert feel authentically annoying to the Irish locals.• West Cork Vibes: While the town of Bodkin is fictional, much of the series was filmed in Union Hall and Glandore in West Cork. The production had to work around the unpredictable Irish weather, which actually helped create the "moody and misty" atmosphere seen in the show.• Secret Symbols: Keep an eye on the background of the Samhain festival scenes; many of the masks and decorations were designed using actual Celtic folklore symbols that hint at the fate of the missing people from the original 1990s case. THE VIBE Like a pint of Guinness that has a bit too much head on it. It smells like sea salt, old pubs, and recording equipment. It’s quirky, cynical, and surprisingly dark. It makes you want to delete your podcast app, visit the Irish coast, and realize that some stories aren't meant to be shared with the world.
