⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Ever wondered what it’s like to live in the most cursed zip code in America? Castle Rock isn't a direct adaptation of one Stephen King book; it’s a "remix" of his entire multiverse. Set in the infamous Maine town, Season 1 follows Henry Deaver (André Holland), a death row attorney who returns home after a mysterious "Kid" (Bill Skarsgård) is found in a literal cage deep inside Shawshank Prison. The show weaves together names and places you know—Sheriff Alan Pangborn, Cujo, the Torrance family—into a brand-new, slow-burn mystery about fate, sin, and why everyone in Maine seems to have a direct line to the devil. THE PROS The atmosphere is a "Guaranteed Banger." It’s thick with dread, Maine fog, and the kind of "unspoken town history" that makes your skin crawl. Bill Skarsgård is haunting as The Kid; he barely speaks, but his "hollow-eyed stare" does more heavy lifting than most 20-page scripts. The standout, however, is Episode 7, "The Queen." Sissy Spacek delivers a powerhouse performance that explores dementia through a lens of time-traveling horror. It is, quite frankly, some of the best television produced in the last decade. It manages to feel like a King novel without ever actually being one. THE CONS It is a "Slow Burn" in the truest sense of the word. If you’re looking for a jump-scare every ten minutes, this isn't your show. The plot takes its sweet time revealing its cards, and some viewers found the ambiguity of the Season 1 finale more frustrating than profound. It also relies heavily on "Easter Egg" energy; while you don't need to know Stephen King to follow it, the show definitely expects you to appreciate the nod to a rabid dog or a certain hotel in Colorado. It’s an 8/10 because while the journey is a Masterpiece, the landing can feel a little shaky for those who want clear-cut answers. THE VERDICT An 8/10. It’s "The Business" for anyone who loves psychological horror that treats the audience like they’re smart. It’s a moody, beautifully acted anthology that understands that the scariest thing about a small town isn't the monsters—it’s the people who live there. Since it just hit Netflix in late 2025, it’s the perfect time to binge both seasons before the "IT: Welcome to Derry" hype train completely takes over your feed. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA Sissy Spacek’s casting is a massive meta-nod, as she played the original Carrie in 1976, essentially kicking off the Stephen King cinematic universe. Also, Jane Levy plays "Jackie Torrance," and yes, she explicitly mentions her "crazy uncle" who tried to axe his family at a ski resort. Fun fact: The "Kid" in the cage was filmed in the real-life abandoned West Virginia Penitentiary, which was used to stand in for Shawshank. Despite the show's cult success, it was famously cancelled by Hulu in 2020 after two seasons, making it a "lost gem" until its 2026 resurgence on Netflix. THE VIBE Like a cold, damp basement in a house you know is haunted. You don't want to go down there, but you’re dying to know what’s making that scratching sound behind the walls.
