Overview

Armed with an arcane knowledge of the dark arts and a wicked wit, John Constantine fights the good fight. With his soul already damned to hell, he’ll do whatever it takes to protect the innocent. With the balance of good and evil on the line, Constantine uses his skills to face the supernatural terrors that threaten our world and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows…maybe there’s hope for him and his soul after all.

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY If you like your magicians with a healthy dose of nicotine and a permanent death wish, then John Constantine is your man. Constantine: City of Demons (2018) is the real-deal animated darkness, following the occult detective as he tracks back to Los Angeles after a decade-long nightmare. His old friend Chas has a daughter with a soul that’s been literally snatched by a demonic entity, and John is their only hope of getting it back without accidentally burning the whole city to a crisp. It’s grim, it’s gory, and it’s light-years away from the sanitized superhero versions of DC you might be used to. THE PROS Matt Ryan voicing John Constantine is a total win; the man has the character locked down so hard it’s sincerely impossible to imagine anyone else muttering spells between puffs. The animation is the business, leaning into a "rated R" aesthetic that doesn’t pull its claws out when the monsters show up. It’s a genuine belter for how it explores the darker, more visceral corners of magic—none of that sparkly wand stuff here, just blood pacts and psychological torture. The short, punchy format makes it perfect for a quick dark fix without any of the repetitive filler found in longer CW seasons. THE CONS It misses the 8/10 mark because it feels a bit more like a movie with broken pacing rather than a true series. It was originally released as webisodes, and you can really feel that start-stop energy at points, which becomes a bit of a head-scratcher if you’re watching the whole thing at once. The villain motivation is a bit wet and standard-issue for the occult genre, making the reveal less thrilling than it should be. It misses the "epic" status because it doesn’t quite dive as deep into the lore as the Hellblazer comics, leaving the vault wanting a bit more meat on the bones. THE VERDICT A 7/10. It is a sincere, dark, and witty-ly written piece of animation that shows DC at its most unfiltered. It isn’t an 8 or 9/10 because it feels too much like a "side quest" rather than a major pillar of the franchise, but as a vault essential for Constantine fans, it’s absolute perfection. It is total garbage that we don't have a new live-action series with Matt Ryan in 2026, but this animated gem keeps it authentic. If you want a tale of regret, demons, and a very tired man in a trenchcoat, this is your stop. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • The Voice Anchor: Matt Ryan has signed on for the character across live-action, animation, and even the Harley Quinn series. It is a sincere show of dedication that he is now recognized as the definitive John Constantine by fans worldwide. • Comic Roots: Unlike other animated films, this one is a witty-ly sharp original story that pulls heavily from the "All His Engines" graphic novel. It’s 100% authentic to John’s darker rules, where magic always comes with a price paid in human misery. • Blood Shed Record: This features more on-screen blood and body horror than almost any other DC animated project from its era. The producers sincerely wanted to push the rating to its limits as a wink to Hellblazer fans who felt the NBC show was a bit too "safe." THE VIBE Like a stale ashtray, the smell of sulfur, and the haunting feeling that everything you love is going to be turned into a soul-devouring demon. It’s cynical, visceral, and unapologetic. It makes you want to lock your doors, learn the Latin for "get out," and realize that in the dark arts, you never really win—you just survive.
