Overview

The story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there's almost nothing left to have. 200 years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind — and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird, and highly violent universe waiting for them.

    ​Fallout (Season 1) ​Rating: 9/10 ​The most "video game" a show has ever felt without being cringe. It’s a beautifully violent, neon-soaked trip through an apocalypse that’s surprisingly polite about its cannibalism. ☢️ ​ THE SUMMARY 200 years after the big one, Lucy MacLean leaves the safety of her underground Vault to find her kidnapped father in the Los Angeles wasteland. Along the way, she crosses paths with a wannabe knight in a giant robot suit and a noseless cowboy who’s been alive (and grumpy) since the Cold War. ​ THE PROS Walton Goggins as The Ghoul is a certified legend—he steals every single scene he’s in. The production design is flawless; everything from the Pip-Boys to the Power Armor feels heavy and real. It perfectly captures that "Fallout" tone: horrifying violence one second, and a cheerful 1950s pop song the next. ​ THE CONS If you aren't familiar with the games, some of the lore-heavy reveals in the final episodes might leave you scratching your head. Also, the pacing in the middle of the season dips slightly as the three main characters wander around without much interaction. ​ THE VERDICT The new gold standard for adaptations. It’s funny, brutal, and treats the source material with actual respect. A 9/10 that’ll make you want to go buy a Geiger counter. ​ INSOMNIAC TRIVIA In the show, the character "The Ghoul" was a famous Hollywood actor named Cooper Howard before the war. This is a nod to real-life Hollywood history, as Walton Goggins himself is often called a "character actor's character actor." Also, the thumb trick Lucy uses to measure the mushroom cloud is a real (though debunked) piece of Cold War survival lore. ​ THE VIBE Retro-futuristic chaos. It feels like watching a 1950s sitcom that someone accidentally dropped into a blender with Mad Max. Best watched with a cold soda and the lights off.
