⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Martin Stone is a straight-laced family man and amateur metal detectorist who finally hits the jackpot in the Somerset countryside. While out on a bonding trip with his "gobby" future son-in-law Ashley, they unearth a hoard of Saxon treasure worth millions. The legal thing to do is report it; the desperate thing to do is sell it on the black market to solve Martin’s mounting financial woes. Naturally, they choose the latter, sparking a high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse with the police, local thugs, and their own crumbling nerves. It’s a classic "ordinary man in extraordinary trouble" thriller that proves that finding gold is the easy part—keeping it is the real nightmare. THE PROS This is a 7/10 because the casting is a stroke of genius. Pairing Neil Morrissey (the king of the relatable "everyman") with James Buckley (bringing that classic *Inbetweeners* "Jay" energy as the loud-mouthed Ashley) creates a fantastic, friction-filled dynamic. It hits the mark because it feels deeply grounded in the UK’s current cost-of-living anxiety, making Martin’s terrible decisions feel uncomfortably understandable. It’s a winner for its tight, four-episode structure that keeps the tension high without dragging things out, and the scenery around Glastonbury adds a beautiful, misty atmosphere to the brewing chaos. Fay Ripley also puts in a solid shift as Martin’s wife, Anne, providing the emotional heart as the family business starts to implode around them. THE CONS It misses an 8 or 9 because some of the plot armor is a bit thick. There are several moments where the characters have loud, incriminating conversations in very public places, and the police work—led by the inept local station—can sometimes feel a bit like a comedy of errors rather than a serious threat. It settles at a 7 because the finale relies on a few "exceptionally dumb" character choices to wrap everything up, which might leave you rolling your eyes at how some of the legal consequences are handled. It’s a "light" thriller that doesn't quite have the grit of something like *Happy Valley* or the wit of *The Outlaws*. THE VERDICT A solid 7/10. It is a punchy, entertaining, and quintessentially British drama that is perfect for a mid-week binge. They even managed to "co-opt" a local wizard who was walking by during filming to appear in the background of a scene.• Fast-Track Production: The show was a massive undertaking for Channel 5, moving from initial conception to final delivery in less than nine months. Writer Dan Sefton had to constantly rewrite scenes on the fly to accommodate local filming locations while keeping the Somerset vibe intact. THE VIBE Like a muddy field at dawn with a thermos of lukewarm tea. It smells like damp earth, old copper, and pure panic. It’s tense, slightly awkward, and very British. It makes you want to buy a metal detector, check your bank balance, and realize that some secrets are too heavy to carry.
