Overview

After the party of heroes defeated the Demon King, they restored peace to the land and returned to lives of solitude. Generations pass, and the elven mage Frieren comes face to face with humanity’s mortality. She takes on a new apprentice and promises to fulfill old friends’ dying wishes. Can an elven mind make peace with the nature of life and death? Frieren embarks on her quest to find out.

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 10/10 THE SUMMARY The Great Demon King has been defeated, and the ten-year quest is over. For the elven mage Frieren, those ten years were just a blink of an eye. She says goodbye to her human companions—Himmel the Hero, Heiter the Priest, and Eisen the Warrior—expecting to see them again in a few "short" decades. But when she returns fifty years later, she finds a world that has moved on and friends who have grown old or passed away. Realizing she wasted her chance to truly know them, Frieren sets out on a new journey toward the land of the souls to say one last goodbye, taking on a young apprentice named Fern along the way. THE PROS This is an absolute masterpiece and a mandatory 10/10 for the site. It hits the top mark because it flips the entire fantasy genre on its head, focusing on what happens *after* the big battle is won. The animation by Madhouse is stunning, especially in the quieter moments where the scenery tells as much of the story as the characters. Frieren herself is a highlight; she starts as a cold, distant immortal and slowly learns the value of a single human life through small, honest memories. The music by Evan Call is beautiful and gives the whole show a pained, nostalgic feeling that sticks with you long after an episode ends. It’s a rare show that can make a simple walk through a forest feel just as epic as a fight with a demon. THE CONS Earning a 10 means the "cons" are almost non-existent. Some might find the pacing a bit of a slog at first because the show is much more interested in atmosphere and conversation than non-stop action. It misses no marks on quality, but the second season (which aired in early 2026) is much shorter at only 10 episodes, which might leave you wanting more after the massive 28-episode debut. A few of the mage exam subplots can feel a bit like a head-scratcher compared to the emotional weight of the early journey, but they still help to flesh out the world and the side characters. Overall, it’s a heavy, thoughtful show that demands your full attention. THE VERDICT 10/10. An epic, beautiful, and deeply moving story about time and regret. It’s an honest 10 and a fair shout for the best anime of the decade.
