Overview

The story kicks off with a prideful King Saul (Ali Suliman) losing his grip on the throne and his sanity. At the same time, an outcast shepherd boy named David (Michael Iskander) is anointed by the prophet Samuel (Stephen Lang) as the true future ruler of Israel. Set against a gritty, violent world of ancient warfare and tribal politics, the show follows David’s journey from the fields to the palace as he navigates forbidden love, intense jealousy, and the inevitable showdown with a giant named Goliath. THE PROS This show is a massive achievement for a biblical drama, moving away from the "shiny" look of older versions to give us something much more grounded and gritty. It hits an 8 because the casting is top-tier; Michael Iskander brings a likable, pained energy to David, while Stephen Lang is perfect as the stern prophet Samuel. The production scale is epic, with battle scenes that feel heavy and honest rather than just clean CGI. A real highlight is Martyn Ford as Goliath; he is genuinely terrifying and brings a physical presence that makes the famous duel feel like a life-or-death struggle. It’s a smart, focused series that balances the "faith" side of the story with the realistic violence of ancient times. THE CONS It stays at an 8 because the pacing can feel a bit like a slog in the middle episodes, especially as it spends a lot of time on palace drama and political maneuvering. It misses a higher mark because some of the historical details—like the use of horses and specific armor styles—are a bit of a head-scratcher for those who know the period. The dialogue can occasionally lean a bit too hard into "epic speech" territory, making some scenes feel a little less human and a bit more like a stage play. While the story is gripping, the sheer amount of pained family betrayal can be a heavy watch that might feel a bit relentless after a few episodes in a row. THE VERDICT 8/10. A gritty, epic, and surprisingly intense take on a classic story. It’s a great result for Prime Video and a fair shout for the best biblical series since *The Chosen*. THE VIBE Like a desert storm at sunset. It smells of dry sand, old leather, and the metallic tang of a sharpened bronze sword.
