Overview

This eight-part epic chronicles the collision of two men who would change the map of Europe forever: Harold Godwinson, the last Anglo-Saxon King of England, and William the Conqueror, the Duke of Normandy. Far from being lifelong enemies, the series explores their complicated history as reluctant allies forced by fate, ambition, and a vacant throne into a war for the soul of a nation. It’s a character-driven saga that leads directly to the legendary Battle of Hastings, proving that the crown isn't just worn—it's taken. THE PROS This is an 8/10 because it’s a high-stakes, gritty historical drama that doesn't just treat history like a textbook. James Norton (Harold) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (William) are perfectly cast; their chemistry captures the shifting tide from mutual respect to absolute rivalry. The production values are staggering—filmed on location in Iceland, the landscapes look raw, cold, and appropriately ancient. It hits the mark because it manages to humanize figures from the Bayeux Tapestry, making the political maneuvering in the mead halls just as tense as the shield walls on the battlefield.
