Led by the legendary Olivia Benson—who has risen from Detective to Captain over nearly three decades—the team navigates the grittiest corners of the city to bring predators to justice. It’s a mix of high-stakes detective work and intense courtroom drama, where the "Special Victims" aren't just case numbers; they are the heart of every story. THE PROS This is an 8/10 because it’s the ultimate endurance runner of television. Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson is arguably the most iconic female lead in procedural history, providing a consistent, empathetic anchor for a show that deals with incredibly dark subject matter. It hits the mark because it isn't afraid to "rip from the headlines," tackling modern issues like social media grooming and deep-state corruption with a fast-paced, "dun-dun" energy that never gets old. It’s a winner for its legendary guest stars and the return of fan-favorites like Elliot Stabler and Amanda Rollins, which keeps the long-term fans (who have been watching since 1999) coming back for more. As of May 2026, Season 27 is still pulling in millions, proving the formula is basically bulletproof. THE CONS It misses a 9/10 because, after over 570 episodes, the "formula" can feel a bit like a treadmill. You can often guess the villain within the first ten minutes based on which guest star looks "too famous" to just be a witness. It settles at an 8 because the recent seasons have occasionally leaned too heavily into the squad's personal drama at the expense of the courtroom scenes, which used to be the show's strongest suit. Some of the newer cast rotations also feel a bit like "musical chairs," making it harder to get attached to the rookies before they’re replaced by the next set of faces. THE VERDICT A solid 8/10. Mariska Hargitay eventually returned the favor by naming her own cat Karma, after the Taylor Swift song. • Secret Woodshop: Peter Scanavino, who plays ADA Sonny Carisi, is a talented woodworker in real life. He actually has a small, functioning woodshop built into his dressing room at the studio so he can work on his hobby between filming scenes. • UN Access: In 2009, SVU became the first-ever scripted series permitted to film on location at the United Nations headquarters in New York City for the episode "Hell," a level of access usually reserved for world leaders.
