Overview

Mark and his 12-year-old daughter’s lives were changed forever 10 years earlier when she was turned into a vampire. Locked in at age 12, perhaps forever, Eleanor lives a closed-in life, able to go out only at night, while her father does his best to provide her with the minimal amount of human blood she needs to stay alive.

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10​ THE SUMMARY How do you turn a haunting, two-hour Swedish masterpiece into a ten-episode American series? You turn it into a high-stakes vampire procedural. This 2022 Showtime reimagining follows Mark (Demián Bichir), a father who has spent ten years on the run after his daughter Eleanor (Madison Taylor Baez) was turned into a vampire. They return to New York City in a desperate search for a cure, moving in next door to a homicide detective (Anika Noni Rose) and her bullied son, Isaiah. It is a Masterpiece of emotional weight that trades the original's icy isolation for a warmer, urban story about the extreme lengths a parent will go to for their child—including hunting humans for breakfast.​ THE PROS Demián Bichir is a Guaranteed Banger. He brings a weary, soulful gravity to the role of Mark that makes you sympathize with a man who is essentially a serial killer for love. The relationship between the two kids, Eleanor and Isaiah, is The Business—it captures that same innocent-yet-dangerous bond from the source material but gives it more room to breathe. The show also does The Business by introducing a parallel plot involving a pharmaceutical dynasty trying to synthesize vampire blood, adding a Sackler-family style villainy that feels very 2026. It is a Masterpiece of tension whenever the secret almost gets out, and the practical effects for the vampire attacks are visceral and messy.​ THE CONS It suffers from Procedural Bloat. It is a 7/10 because it occasionally feels like it is trying to be three different shows at once: a horror movie, a family drama, and an NYPD crime thriller. By Americanizing the story, it loses that unique, quiet stink of suburban paranoia that made the original so special. It is a head-scratcher why the show ends on such a massive cliffhanger, especially since it was cancelled after just one season and then—in a move that was total Garbage—completely scrubbed from streaming services for a tax write-off. It misses the 9/10 mark because it feels like a very good TV version of a story that was already a perfect film.​ THE VERDICT A 7/10. It is The Business for fans of elevated horror who want more backstory than the movies provided. It is a Masterpiece of atmosphere that was unfortunately killed off before it could truly reach its potential. It is Garbage that you can barely find it anywhere to watch in 2026 due to the great Streaming Purge, but if you can track it down, it is a solid, heartbreaking addition to the 900+ archive.​ INSOMNIAC TRIVIA ​The Penny Contract: The original author, John Ajvide Lindqvist, famously revealed he earned virtually zero royalties from this series. He inadvertently sold the all-media rights to his book for just 1 SEK (about 10 cents) years ago, believing he was only signing off on one movie.​The TNT Curse: This was not the first attempt at a show; a completely different pilot was developed for TNT in 2017 starring Kristine Froseth, but it was scrapped before ever airing.​The Voice Hack: In the original 2008 film, the girl's voice was entirely dubbed by another actress to make her sound more androgynous. In this 2022 version, Madison Taylor Baez used her natural voice but had to undergo physicality training to move like a creature that has not aged in a decade.​The Scientist Connection: Grace Gummer, who plays the scientist Claire, is the daughter of Meryl Streep—bringing some Prestige Acting DNA to the vampire-blood-research plotline.​The 2026 Connection: After its removal from Showtime, the show became a digital ghost until 2026, when a cult following on physical media caused the original episodes to start trending again on underground Preservation sites.​ THE VIBE Like a cold wind blowing through a subway tunnel. It is gritty, urban, and lonely, but there is a flicker of warmth in the darkness that keeps you watching—even if you know the sun is eventually going to come up.
