Overview

After a plane crash, a group of schoolboys find themselves stranded on a tropical island without adults. Ralph is elected leader and, with the help of the intelligent Piggy, strives to maintain order and civilization. Jack, responsible for the signal fire, becomes increasingly focused on hunting and power struggles. This leads to tensions within the group, gradually pushing the boys from hope and structure into chaos and tragedy.

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10​ THE SUMMARY ​Jack Thorne (Adolescence, His Dark Materials) finally brings William Golding’s 1954 nightmare to the small screen in this 2026 BBC mini-series. Four episodes, four perspectives: Ralph, Piggy, Simon, and Jack. The setup is a classic: a plane full of schoolboys crashes on a remote island in Malaysia. What follows isn't a tropical vacation; it’s a terrifying descent from "British manners" into "tribal madness." Thorne adds an "emotional edge" by giving the boys backstories, making their transformation into spear-wielding savages feel less like a fable and more like a tragic psychological breakdown.​ THE PROS ​The young, mostly unknown cast is a "Guaranteed Banger." David McKenna as Piggy is heartbreakingly good—he manages to be the "voice of reason" without being annoying, which is a tough tightrope to walk. The decision to dedicate each episode to a specific character's perspective adds a layer of intimacy that the movies always lacked. Visually, it’s stunning; the Malaysian jungle looks lush and inviting one minute and like a claustrophobic cage the next. It leans into the "surreal horror" of the book, especially the scenes involving the "Beast" and the fly-covered pig’s head, which are genuinely unsettling.​ THE CONS ​Thorne’s attempt to "humanize" the boys with backstories is a bit of a double-edged sword. While it makes them more relatable, it also takes away some of the primal, allegorical mystery that made the original novel so haunting. Some purists might find the script a bit too "modern" or clinical in its approach to child psychology. Also, at only four episodes, the transition from "civilized boys" to "murderous hunters" can feel a little rushed—you might find yourself wondering exactly when they decided that wearing face paint meant the rules of the Geneva Convention no longer applied.​ THE VERDICT ​An 8/10. It’s a bold, brutal, and beautiful adaptation that breathes new life into a story we all had to read in school. It’s "The Business" for anyone who likes their drama with a side of existential dread. It’s the first-ever TV adaptation, and Thorne has set a high bar, even if it loses a bit of Golding’s original "dread" in favor of emotional depth.​ INSOMNIAC TRIVIA ​ Casting director Nina Gold (who found the kids for Game of Thrones) looked at over 3,000 boys to find this group, many of whom are making their professional acting debuts. Also, writer Jack Thorne has been trying to get this adaptation made for over a decade; he originally pitched it as a much longer series before settling on the four-part "character study" format. Fun fact: The series is a co-production with the Australian streamer Stan, and Sony Pictures Television just sold the US rights to Netflix, where it’s set to land on May 4, 2026.​ THE VIBE ​ Like a seashell being crushed in the sand. It’s a beautiful, fragile reminder of civilization that slowly turns into something sharp, jagged, and dangerous.
