⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Part conspiracy thriller, part historical true crime, Manhunt follows the high-stakes search for John Wilkes Booth in the immediate aftermath of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. While Booth is on the run, Secretary of War Edwin Stanton—Lincoln’s right-hand man—becomes obsessed with tracking him down and preserving the President’s vision for a reconstructed America. It’s a race against time through the swamps of Maryland and the political minefields of Washington D.C., where every second the killer remains free is another second the country risks falling back into civil war. THE PROS This is an 8/10 because it treats the hunt like a 19th-century version of a modern police procedural. Tobias Menzies is brilliant as Stanton; he plays him with a weary, focused intensity that makes the bureaucracy of war feel genuinely thrilling. The show does a great job of showing that Booth wasn't just a "lone nut," but part of a wider, terrifying conspiracy. Anthony Boyle captures Booth’s vanity and desperation perfectly, making him a villain you love to watch. It’s an 8 because the production values are massive, and it manages to turn a historical event we all know the ending to into a gripping "will-they-catch-him" thriller. THE CONS It misses a 9 because the jumping timelines can occasionally be a bit jarring. The show frequently cuts back to Lincoln’s life before the theater, which is great for character building but can sometimes stall the momentum of the actual manhunt. It settles at an 8 because while it’s incredibly well-researched, some of the dialogue feels a bit "educational," as if the characters are explaining history to the audience rather than just living in it.
