Overview

It's 1946, and peace has dealt Peggy Carter a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life - Steve Rogers.

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY It’s 1946, and the war is over, but Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) is fighting a new battle at home. While the men have returned to take over the field work at the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR), Peggy is stuck doing secretarial work and getting coffee for her less-capable colleagues. When her old friend Howard Stark is framed for selling deadly weapons to enemies, Peggy goes on a secret mission to clear his name. Teaming up with Stark’s butler, Edwin Jarvis (James D’Arcy), she navigates a world of double agents, high-tech gadgets, and old-school sexism to stop a shadowy organization from tearing New York apart. THE PROS Hayley Atwell is the heart and soul of the show, and she’s a total highlight. She plays Peggy with a perfect mix of grit, humor, and a pained sense of duty that makes her one of the best characters in the Marvel universe. The partnership between Peggy and Edwin Jarvis is the standout part of the series; their back-and-forth is funny and sincere, providing a light touch to a story that can get quite dark. It hits an 8 because the 1940s setting is handled with real style, from the costumes to the jazz-age soundtrack, making it feel like a classic spy thriller. It’s an honest look at the origin of S.H.I.E.L.D. and gives Peggy the spotlight she truly deserves after her debut in the Captain America movies. THE CONS It stays at an 8 because the second season, while still good, loses a bit of its punch as the story moves to Los Angeles and the plot becomes a little more "supernatural" than the grounded spy drama of the first year. It misses a higher mark because some of the secondary male characters at the SSR can feel like one-dimensional obstacles rather than real people, making their constant sexism feel a bit repetitive. The pacing can be a bit of a slog in the middle of the seasons as the show stretches the mystery to fill the episodes. Also, the fact that the show was canceled on a massive cliffhanger is an honest head-scratcher that leaves fans wanting a proper ending that we may never get. THE VERDICT 8/10. A smart, stylish, and punchy spy drama that’s a fair shout for Marvel’s most underrated series. It’s a great result for fans of the early MCU and a must-watch for anyone who loves a good period piece with a punch. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • James D’Arcy, who plays Edwin Jarvis, is the first actor in Marvel history to play the same character in both a TV show and a big-budget movie after he made a cameo in *Avengers: Endgame*.• To keep the 1940s look authentic, the show’s costume designer sourced original vintage clothing from the era, which meant Hayley Atwell often had to perform her stunts in real, restrictive period suits and heels.• The "Captain America Adventure Program" heard on the radio in the show was a nod to real-world 1940s radio serials; the actors in those scenes were actually playing the characters from the original Captain America movie who were still alive. THE VIBE Like a red lipstick stain on a secret file. It smells of expensive cologne, old paper, and the metallic tang of a concealed pistol.
