⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 3/10 THE SUMMARY The Royal Family of Attilan, a group of superpowered beings living in a hidden city on the Moon, is split apart by a coup. The King’s brother, Maximus (Iwan Rheon), takes over the throne, forcing the rest of the family—including the silent King Black Bolt and his wife Medusa—to flee to Hawaii. Scattered across the island without their resources, they have to find each other, get back home, and stop a civil war before their secret society is exposed to the world. THE PROS Iwan Rheon is the only person here who really gets the job done, playing the villain with more energy and purpose than any of the heroes. It hits a 3 because Lockjaw, the giant teleporting bulldog, is the real star of the show and brings some much-needed life to the screen. Anson Mount does a good job playing a character who can't speak, using a custom sign language that adds a bit of depth to his role. A few of the tropical locations look nice, but they mostly just highlight how out of place the characters feel in their cheap-looking costumes. THE CONS It stays at a 3 because it’s confusing how a big brand could make a show look this low-budget, with sets that look like empty warehouses rather than a royal palace. It misses a higher mark because the writing is a slog, filled with stale drama and lines that feel like they came out of a dated soap opera. The choice to shave off Medusa’s magical hair in the first episode was a huge mistake that took away the show's most interesting special effect right at the start. The pacing is slow, the action is forgettable, and for a story about "royals," it feels very small and unimportant. THE VERDICT 3/10. A dull, messy effort that makes a family of moon-gods feel totally boring. Even a giant dog can't save this one from being a letdown. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • To make Black Bolt’s signing look real, Anson Mount created his own secret language for the show instead of using standard sign language, which kept his character’s alien roots intact.• The "palace" on the Moon was actually filmed in an old airplane hangar in Hawaii, which is why the rooms look so bare and concrete-heavy instead of looking like a high-tech city.• Because the budget for the special effects was tight, the producers decided to have Medusa's hair shaved off early on to save money on the expensive computer work needed to make it move. THE VIBE Like a budget cruise ship in a storm. It smells of cheap hairspray, hotel air conditioning, and missed potential.
