    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Think of this as the "Avengers" for the street-level heroes who prefer a pint in a dive bar to a gala in a skyscraper. The Defenders (2017) brings together Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist to save New York City from an ancient ninja cult called The Hand. They aren't exactly thrilled to be working together—Jessica thinks they're all weirdos, and Matt just wants to stay retired—but when Sigourney Weaver starts leveling buildings, they don't have much of a choice. It’s an eight-episode crossover event that tries to mash four very different shows into one gritty package. THE PROS The chemistry between the four leads is the best thing about the show. Seeing Jessica Jones mock Matt Murdock’s "devil" costume or watching Luke Cage and Danny Rand finally meet is exactly why people tuned in. It’s punchy and moves much faster than the individual shows because it’s only eight episodes, cutting out a lot of the usual filler. Sigourney Weaver brings some serious class as the villain, Alexandra, making the threat feel much bigger than just another mob boss. The action scenes, especially the boardroom fight early on, are great and actually give each hero a chance to show off their specific skills. THE CONS It’s a 7/10 because the villains, "The Hand," are ultimately a bit of a letdown. After being built up for years across multiple shows, they end up feeling like generic ninjas that are easily defeated. The plot is also a bit of a head-scratcher; it relies heavily on the "mystical hole in the ground" storyline from Iron Fist, which was the least popular part of the whole universe. It misses an 8/10 because the final episodes feel a bit rushed and messy, and for a big crossover, it doesn't quite have the "epic" scale you’d expect from something that took years to build. THE VERDICT A solid 7/10. It’s a fun, quick watch that is worth it just to see the heroes finally interact and trade insults. It isn't an 8 because the story is a bit weak and the villains don't live up to the hype, but it’s still a decent payoff for fans of the Netflix era. If you’ve watched the individual shows, you have to see how it ends, but don't expect it to change your life. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Color Coded: To help the audience keep track of who is who, the show uses specific lighting for each hero. Scenes with Matt have red tints, Jessica has purple/blue, Luke has yellow/gold, and Danny has green. When they finally team up, the colors start to mix together in the same shots.• Elevator Tease: One of the early trailers featured a "security camera" shot of the four heroes in an elevator. If you look at the time stamp in the corner, it says 8:18:20:17—which was the exact release date of the series (August 18, 2017).• Spider-Reference: The rooftop garden where Alexandra meets her associates is actually the same location where Spider-Man dropped off Mary Jane in the 2002 Sam Raimi movie. It's a nice, subtle nod to the wider Marvel history in New York. THE VIBE Like a crowded New York subway car where everyone is annoyed but they all have to work together to fix the engine. It smells like rainy pavement and cheap whiskey. It’s tense, funny, and a bit chaotic. It makes you want to find three unlikely friends, go to a Chinese restaurant, and realize that you're better off together than alone.
